2019 Viña Ardanza Reserva, La Rioja Alta *Jeroboam Gift Box*

Rioja Alta, Rioja, Spain

A magnificent Jeroboam (3L) of 2019 Viña Ardanza Reserva packed in a beautiful Gift Box.

A classic Rioja with generosity, grace and a magnificent sense of occasion, the 2019 Viña Ardanza layers ripe cherry, redcurrant and juicy plum with the fragrant complexity of patiently matured American oak. Vanilla, clove and nutmeg weave through the fruit, followed by liquorice, tobacco leaf and a gentle balsamic lift. There is richness here, but also freshness and definition, with each swirl revealing another detail of this much-loved Reserva.

The palate is beautifully proportioned, combining concentrated red fruit with supple tannins and a lively thread of acidity. Its generous texture carries the oak spice effortlessly, while a long, savoury finish keeps the fruit in focus. Decant to enjoy its youthful depth over a leisurely dinner, or cellar for further complexity. Presented in a gift box, this impressive three-litre jeroboam holds the equivalent of four standard bottles, making it a memorable gift for a Rioja enthusiast and a fitting centrepiece for a table of friends.

Registered in 1942, Viña Ardanza has become one of Rioja’s defining wines. Its character rests on the partnership between Tempranillo from Rioja Alta and Garnacha from the stony La Pedriza estate in Rioja Oriental. The former provides structure and freshness; the latter brings fragrant fruit and generosity. Long maturation in American oak completes its unmistakably classical style.

The 2019 vintage is particularly significant for La Rioja Alta. Following the decision not to make Viña Ardanza in 2018, this release combines the concentration of a small crop with the freshness and balance needed for extended ageing. Officially rated Excellent in Rioja, it is a vintage the estate regards as among its finest, with considerable promise for the years ahead.

Founded in 1890 by five Riojan and Basque families, La Rioja Alta occupies a central place in the history of Haro’s celebrated Barrio de la Estación. Its first president, Doña Saturnina García Cid y Gárate, helped establish a house whose reputation would be built on patient maturation and meticulous craftsmanship. Today, its Reservas and Gran Reservas remain reference points for traditional Rioja.

The estate’s vineyards provide a varied palette of sites, from the Atlantic-influenced conditions and clay-limestone soils of Rioja Alta to the warmer, stony vineyards of Rioja Oriental. For Viña Ardanza, mature Tempranillo vineyards around Fuenmayor and Cenicero are complemented by Garnacha from La Pedriza, whose elevated position helps preserve freshness alongside ripe fruit.

Winemaker Julio Sáenz combines traditional cellar practices with precise modern selection. American oak barrels made in the house’s own cooperage and careful manual racking remain integral to the wines’ identity. In the vineyards and winery, reduced chemical inputs, water conservation and renewable energy form part of an ongoing commitment to protecting the land that supports the estate.

A blend of 80% Tempranillo and 20% Garnacha. The Tempranillo comes from La Cuesta and Montecillo, with vines over 30 years old, while the Garnacha is sourced from La Pedriza in Tudelilla, at approximately 550 metres. Grapes were hand-picked into boxes, selected in the vineyard and transported under refrigeration.

Further optical sorting preceded fermentation. The destemmed fruit fermented in stainless-steel tanks over 17 days, followed by natural malolactic fermentation. The two varieties were matured separately to accommodate their different characters.

Tempranillo spent 36 months in American oak, while Garnacha matured for 30 months, with 20% new barrels used for the Garnacha component. Five traditional rackings by candlelight took place during maturation. The varieties were blended before bottling in December 2023, followed by further bottle ageing before release.

Alcohol: 14.5%. Residual sugar: 1.7g/L. Total acidity: 5.5g/L. pH: 3.54. Recommended drinking window: 2026–2038.
