2019 The Ploughmen Sauzal Vineyard, Garage Wine Company

Cauquenes, Maule Valley, Chile

The Ploughman’s Oracle

This is Chilean old-vine red with grit, perfume and a beautifully wild heartbeat. From Sauzal Vineyard in Empedrado, it brings together Carignan, Garnacha and Mataró in a field blend full of dark plum, blackberry, redcurrant and violet, followed by cedar, dried herbs, orange peel, aniseed, earth and a little smoky spice. It feels rooted and alive, with the sort of savoury depth that only old vines and careful hands can bring.

The palate is vivid, textured and quietly powerful, with black fruit, red berries, fine tannins and pulsing acidity running into a long, stony finish. There is richness here, but also lift, giving the wine that wonderful Garage Wine Company balance of rusticity and elegance. It is handmade, dry-farmed, deeply expressive and full of Maule soul.

For when you want a red with old-vine depth, Chilean character and something properly human behind it.
Pairs with lamb shoulder, grilled steak, pork belly, mushroom stew, smoky aubergine, charcuterie, lentils, or anything cooked slowly over fire.
If this wine were… a field, it would be a forgotten Maule hillside brought back to life by horse, hand and stubborn belief.

Garage Wine Company began in Pilar Miranda and Derek Mossman Knapp’s garage, alongside Dr Alvaro Peña, before becoming one of Chile’s most respected small-scale producers. Their work focuses on old, dry-farmed vineyards, small growers and forgotten parcels across Maule and Itata, using native yeasts, hand punch-downs, basket pressing and a deep commitment to reviving Chile’s old-vine heritage.

Toronto-born Derek Mossman Knapp originally went to Chile to ski, found snow, love and wine and never looked back. In 2001 he co-founded The Garage Wine Company together with his wife Pilar, and oenologist Dr. Alvaro Peña.

Focussing on the Coastal Range in the Maule, they established a ‘revival’ winemaking programme focused on rediscovering old, neglected parcels of vines, combined with small batch experiments. These ancient, dry-farmed vines, with deep, complex root systems are what makes this project so special.

For over 20 years, working with small vigneron partners who use ancestral knowledge passed down through generations, they have slowly nurtured these parcels, vine by vine using regenerative farming techniques. The wines are thoughtfully crafted with wild yeasts, in small lots with manual punch downs and a small, basket press.

The Garage Wine Company has become an important part of Chile’s dynamic artisanal wine scene, and their collection of award-winning, individual and sometimes limited wines is something truly special. “Garage is Garage, because sometimes it is the people no one imagines anything of, who do the things that no one can imagine”.

The grapes were naturally fermented in open top fermenters with native yeasts with manual punching down of the cap and manual pressing. A small portion of the wine (1/5) was vinified as whole bunches, which underwent the traditional practice of treading -with clean feet- resulting in a portion with higher tannins and VA, which complemented the remainder of the barrels. The wine was aged in third-use barrels, along with some foudres, from various cooperages lasting over two winters.
