2019 The Holy Trinity GSM, Grant Burge

Barossa Valley, Australia

Violets and raspberries lead the way, joined by blood plum, blackberry and redcurrant, with ground ginger, nutmeg, dried herbs and cocoa bringing darker complexity. It has the ripe generosity expected from Barossa, but there is fragrance and savoury detail here too.

Medium to full-bodied, with Grenache providing brightness, Shiraz adding depth and Mourvèdre bringing spice and grip. The fruit feels rich without becoming heavy, shaped by fine, sandy tannins and fresh acidity. Now in a lovely drinking window, this is a beautifully composed GSM offering old-vine character, genuine complexity and far more finesse than its generous style might suggest.

For when: The barbecue runs late, and the good bottles come out.

Pairs with: Rosemary lamb chops, duck confit, slow-roasted pork, smoky aubergine or a rich mushroom and lentil pie.

Grant Burge is one of the Barossa Valley’s most recognised names, with a family connection to the region stretching back five generations. The Holy Trinity brings together fruit from mature, dry-grown vineyards, capturing the warmth of Barossa through a more fragrant, savoury and finely structured lens.

Grant Burge is one of the Barossa Valley’s most established names, built on five generations of family involvement in grape growing and winemaking. The family’s connection with the region reaches back to the nineteenth century, when Meshach Burge began making wine in 1865. Grant Burge established the modern winery in 1988, drawing on that inheritance while developing a distinctly contemporary Barossa style.

The producer works across both the Barossa and Eden Valleys, using the contrast between the warmer valley floor and Eden’s higher, cooler vineyards to match varieties with suitable sites. Its vineyard sources include celebrated names such as Filsell, Chaff Mill and Corryton Park, with old vines playing an important role throughout the range.

Long-serving winemaker Craig Stansborough joined in 1993 and has helped shape wines known for ripe fruit, generosity and reliable structure. The best examples carry power without losing definition, making them approachable in youth but capable of developing with age. The Holy Trinity is a particularly strong expression of this approach: a traditional Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvèdre blend that combines Barossa warmth with fragrance, savoury detail and polished tannins.

A traditional Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvèdre blend made with Barossa Valley fruit, predominantly hand-picked from dry-grown vines between 35 and 90 years old. Vineyard sources include Materne, Chaff Mill, Filsell, Smith and Fromm, with the final proportions determined through parcel and barrel selection.

The 2019 season was exceptionally dry, with below-average winter rainfall followed by a dry spring and summer. Steady ripening allowed the earlier parcels to develop evenly, while warmer, drier conditions later in the harvest helped Grenache and Mourvèdre reach full maturity.

The separate parcels were fermented on their skins for seven to eight days. A portion was fermented in concrete using traditional heading boards, while selected batches received a further three to four weeks of skin contact after fermentation to build colour, texture and tannin. The wine was bottled under screw cap.
