2019 Syrah 'Clonal Selection', Kershaw

Western Cape, South Africa

Elgin Nocturne

Deeply aromatic and beautifully composed, this Elgin Syrah combines dark fruit richness with the floral, peppery detail that makes the variety so captivating in cooler vineyards. Blackberry and black raspberry unfold alongside wild lavender, rosemary and dried orange peel, with crushed peppercorns bringing a fragrant lift. Beneath the fruit, black olive, savoury earth and roasted meat add intrigue, while subtle vanilla and coffee notes lend warmth and polish.

The palate has real depth, with concentrated fruit supported by fine, powdery tannins and a bright thread of acidity. Generous through the middle, it remains focused and fresh, gradually revealing layers of olive tapenade, spice and dark berries. The finish is long and savoury, with a gentle mineral tension that draws you back to the glass. Give it time in a decanter to appreciate its complexity now, or cellar it for further development. A compelling choice for lovers of Northern Rhône Syrah who enjoy fragrance, structure and substance in equal measure.

For when: The evening calls for slow cooking, good company and a red worth taking your time over.

Pairs with: Roast lamb with rosemary and anchovy, venison loin with juniper, braised beef cheeks, duck breast with blackberry jus, mushroom and chestnut Wellington, or chargrilled aubergine with lentils.

Clonal Selection brings together carefully chosen forms of Syrah from individual Elgin vineyards, with each component contributing its own fragrance, texture and structure. Richard Kershaw’s approach is to understand those differences before blending them into a complete wine. Elgin’s cool growing conditions give this cuvée its distinctive combination of concentrated fruit, savoury complexity and freshness.

British-born Richard Kershaw began his working life as a chef before pursuing wine, gaining experience in California, Chile, Bordeaux, Hungary and Germany. He settled in South Africa in 1999, became a Master of Wine in 2011 and established Kershaw Wines in 2012. Chardonnay and Syrah were his original focus, with Pinot Noir joining the range in 2015.

Elgin’s elevated vineyards, maritime influence and cool nights provide the conditions central to his work. Slow ripening allows flavour to develop while retaining natural acidity, and differences in soil and exposure give individual parcels their own character. These variations are explored through carefully selected clones, with the Clonal Selection range bringing complementary vineyard expressions together.

Richard works alongside oenologist Dudley Wilson, combining restrained handling with meticulous attention to detail. Individual parcels are vinified separately, and oak choices are tailored to the fruit. Regular tasting throughout maturation guides the final blends, producing wines distinguished by their layered flavour, finely judged texture and balance.

Made from 100% Syrah, using clones SH9c and SH22, selected from five vineyard parcels in Elgin. Grapes were hand-picked between 20 and 25 March 2019.

The grapes were destemmed and transferred to small, open-topped fermenters. A three-day maceration preceded spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts. Gentle punch-downs supported extraction, and the remaining skins were basket-pressed after the wine was drawn off. Malolactic fermentation took place in barrel.

Maturation lasted seventeen months, using French oak alongside breathable egg-shaped vessels. Oak was selected from Burgundian and Rhône coopers, with the vintage’s barrel selection including 58% new oak. Each clone and soil combination was handled separately before blending.

Alcohol: 13.93%. Suitable for vegans. Recommended drinking window: 2026–2033.
