2019 Organic Terre San Nicola Rosso, Di Filippo
Umbria, Italy
Dark cherry and ripe red berries lead the aroma, layered with tobacco, dried herbs and gentle oak spice. There is an appealing earthy warmth beneath the fruit, giving this mature Umbrian red a character that feels both generous and reassuringly rustic.
Dry and medium-bodied, with Sangiovese bringing freshness and red-fruit energy, Merlot adding softness, and Sagrantino providing grip and savoury depth. Firm but well-settled tannins frame a persistent finish of cherry, tobacco and spice. This is a characterful organic red with enough structure for hearty food, but enough polish to enjoy without ceremony.
For when: A rustic Italian supper calls for something earthy and warming.
Pairs with: Slow-roasted lamb, wild mushroom pasta, porchetta, Umbrian sausages, beef ragù or mature Pecorino.
Terre di San Nicola is an organic blend of Sangiovese, Merlot and Sagrantino grown in the hills of Umbria. The vineyards are cultivated with an unusually hands-on approach, including the use of horses, while 12 months in a combination of tonneaux and large casks gives the wine complexity without hiding its generous red fruit.
