2019 Directors' Cut Shiraz, Heartland
Langhorne Creek, Australia
Heartland Wines, founded by esteemed winemaker Ben Glaetzer, is dedicated to producing premium wines from the rich soils of South Australia’s Langhorne Creek, a region celebrated for its consistency, old vines, and cooling maritime breezes. The Directors’ Cut is Heartland’s flagship Shiraz and represents the pinnacle of their selection, made only from the finest parcels of fruit – hence the name. The vines used for this wine are over 50 years old, producing low yields of intensely flavoured grapes.
In the glass, the nose is heady and exotic, bursting with aromas of blackberry jam, cracked black pepper, and warm spice notes evocative of a Turkish bazaar, clove, cardamom, and sweet cinnamon. On the palate, generous layers of purple and black fruits unfold, plum compote, black cherry, and cassis intertwined with nuances of rosewater, aniseed, and dark chocolate. Firm yet polished tannins are framed by bright acidity, while 14 months in French oak (60% new) adds structure, finesse, and a touch of savoury depth. The finish is long, perfumed, and refreshingly vibrant.

Notable Awards
95/100 – James Halliday Wine Companion “Excellent hue and depth, an early harbinger of a very good vintage, the bouquet and palate living up to the promise. It is a broad-shouldered, luscious and rich wine, borrowing some dark chocolate from McLaren Vale, adding licorice and plum fruit flavours.”

Heartland Wines is a premium, independent producer located in the heart of Langhorne Creek, South Australia, one of the country’s oldest and most underappreciated wine regions. Founded in the early 2000s by a passionate collective of friends, including acclaimed winemaker Ben Glaetzer, Heartland was born from a shared belief in the exceptional potential of Langhorne Creek’s fruit and a desire to craft wines of balance, integrity, and character.
The region’s cooling maritime influence from nearby Lake Alexandrina and the Southern Ocean allows for a long, even ripening season, ideal for preserving freshness and aromatics in the fruit. Combined with deep, fertile alluvial soils and a legacy of old vines, some more than a century old, Langhorne Creek offers a unique terroir that Heartland captures with clarity and precision.
Heartland’s winemaking philosophy centres on showcasing the pure expression of place, with a focus on classic Australian varietals like Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Dolcetto, often blended or vinified in innovative ways. Their flagship range, Directors’ Cut, exemplifies the estate’s commitment to quality, sourced only from the most exceptional fruit parcels and aged in fine French oak.
The grapes are selected from some of the best Shiraz vineyards in the region. These vineyards are chosen for the consistent intensity and texture of the fruit. The strictest pruning techniques are used. The fruit for Directors’ Cut Shiraz was harvested at night and then crushed in small open-top stainless-steel fermenters. After 24 hours of skin contact, fermentation was commenced with our Rhône isolate yeast. Following 10 days of cool fermentation on skins and pumped over 3 times daily, the wine was transferred to French and American oak hogsheads for 12-14 months of maturation. In the 2019 vintage, we have limited ourselves to 40% new oak to ensure the fruit remains the focus.
