2019 Chateau Le Pey

Medoc, Bordeaux, France

Deep ruby in the glass, this classic Médoc claret greets you with aromas of ripe blackcurrant, cedar, and warm spice, lifted by hints of graphite and tobacco leaf. The palate is polished and poised with layers of dark berry fruit and plum framed by supple tannins and a fine, savoury edge. The 55% Cabernet Sauvignon brings backbone and depth, while the 45% Merlot rounds things out with smooth texture and ripe fruit. Aged 12 months in oak (25% new), it’s full, balanced, and quietly sophisticated, the sort of wine that makes you remember why Bordeaux became timeless.

For when: the fire’s crackling and dinner’s taking its time.
Pairs with: roast beef, venison stew, or aged Comté.

Situated just north of Saint-Estèphe, Château Le Pey is one of the oldest estates owned by the Compagnet family and proudly part of the Cru Bourgeois Alliance since 2003. Its clay and limestone soils and 20-year-old vines yield wines that balance structure with plush, approachable fruit. With 32 hectares under vine, predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, the château captures the essence of northern Médoc terroir: bold yet measured, refined yet generous.

Château Le Pey is situated in Bégadan in the northern Médoc and is the oldest and most important property belonging to the Compagnet family. Claude and Françoise Compagnet developed the estate alongside their sons, Olivier and Pierre, who joined the family business in the 1990s. The family remains closely involved in every stage, from cultivating the vines to vinification, bottling and commercialisation.

The estate’s vineyards are planted on clay-limestone soils with 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Merlot. These cooler northern Médoc conditions allow Cabernet Sauvignon to retain freshness and structure, while the clay component gives Merlot sufficient richness and roundness.

Château Le Pey was classified as a Cru Bourgeois in 2003 and has long been associated with the Alliance des Crus Bourgeois. Consultant oenologist Antoine Médeville works with the family to produce traditional, generous Médoc with an emphasis on ripe fruit, balance and approachable structure.

The 2019 Château Le Pey is a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Merlot. The vines have an average age of approximately 20 years and are planted at a density of 5,000 to 6,000 vines per hectare on clay-limestone soils. Double Guyot pruning is used, with harvesting timed to capture optimum ripeness.

Vinification took place in temperature-controlled cement vats following a cold pre-fermentation maceration. An extended period in vat encouraged thorough contact between the juice and grape skins, building colour, flavour and structure while preserving the wine’s natural fruit.

The wine matured for a minimum of 12 months in French oak barrels, 25% of which were new. It received a light filtration before being bottled approximately 18 months after the harvest.

Alcohol: 13.5%. Recommended drinking window: now to the end of 2030.
