2018 Vintage Champagne, Piper-Heidsieck - Gift Box

Champagne, France

Golden Exuberance

A thoughtful Christmas present with plenty to celebrate inside, this gift-boxed vintage Champagne brings together the reassurance of a historic house and the individuality of an exceptional growing season. Generous, expressive and beautifully polished, Piper-Heidsieck’s 2018 makes a delightful gift for a Champagne enthusiast, a generous thank-you to festive hosts or a special bottle to share around your own table.

Radiant and inviting, the 2018 opens with nectarine, ripe pear and red berries, followed by toasted almond, delicate pastry and a subtle suggestion of mocha. A floral lift brings elegance to the richer aromas, while hints of smoke and gentle spice add a savoury dimension. There is an appealing warmth to the fruit, capturing the sunshine of the vintage without losing the freshness that makes fine Champagne so compelling.

The palate is generous yet precise, with a creamy mousse carrying raspberry, pineapple and citrus through a finely balanced, gently toasted finish. Bright acidity keeps the fruit lively, while a little peppery spice adds interest as the flavours linger. Already deliciously approachable, it has the substance to accompany a meal and the structure to develop further in the bottle. This is Champagne for those who enjoy expressive fruit, satisfying depth and a sense of occasion in every glass.

For when: You want the present to be opened, the glasses brought out and the celebrations to begin.

Pairs with: Serve with butter-roasted lobster, seared scallops with cauliflower purée, roast chicken with morels, smoked salmon blinis, truffled mushroom tart or mature Comté.

The 2018 holds a special place in Piper-Heidsieck’s recent history as Émilien Boutillat’s debut vintage blend for the house. Drawn from sixteen crus, it combines Chardonnay’s finesse with the depth of Pinot Noir and a small contribution of Meunier. Extended lees ageing adds complexity to a wine whose personality remains unmistakably shaped by the warmth and abundant fruit of the year.

Founded in Reims in 1785 by Florens-Louis Heidsieck, Piper-Heidsieck is one of Champagne’s historic names. Its international reputation developed through the work of Christian Heidsieck and Henri-Guillaume Piper, whose partnership gave the house its familiar name. Today, its distinctive style combines lively fruit, generous texture and carefully judged freshness.

The house works with vineyards across Champagne, drawing on the contrasting characters of the Montagne de Reims, Côte des Blancs, Vallée de la Marne and Aube. This breadth gives the winemaking team a diverse selection of parcels to blend, balancing structure, fragrance and finesse. For the 2018 Vintage, sixteen crus were selected, approximately two-thirds classified as Grand or Premier Cru.

Chief winemaker Émilien Boutillat has led the cellar since 2018, combining respect for the house style with a strong commitment to environmental progress. Piper-Heidsieck achieved B Corp certification in 2022, reflecting work extending beyond the cellar to its social and environmental practices. Precision in blending and patient maturation remain central to the wines.

The blend comprises 50% Chardonnay, 47% Pinot Noir and 3% Meunier, sourced from sixteen crus, predominantly Grand and Premier Cru sites. Only the first pressing, known as the cuvée, was selected, providing the foundation for a wine of finesse and ageing potential.

Following gentle pressing, the first fermentation took place in stainless-steel tanks. The wines were then racked and underwent full malolactic fermentation before blending and bottling with selected yeasts for the second fermentation.

The Champagne spent more than fifty months ageing on its lees, developing texture and complexity. After disgorgement, a dosage of 7g/L was added, followed by at least six months of further bottle rest before release.

The 2018 season began with a mild, wet winter and a warm spring punctuated by storms. An exceptionally sunny, dry summer followed, bringing an early harvest that began on 20 August. For Piper-Heidsieck, the combination of generous yields, ripe fruit and freshness provided particularly expressive material for Boutillat’s first vintage blend.

Alcohol: 12%. Dosage: 7g/L. Suitable for vegans. Recommended drinking window: now–2035.
