2018 Right Hand Pinot Noir, Paddy Borthwick
Gladstone, Wairarapa, New Zealand
Plum Signal
The 2018 Right Hand Pinot Noir is the more instinctive, flowing half of the Borthwick duo. It leans into cherry, plum, redcurrant, earth, spice and a gentle savoury warmth, with a darker fruit profile than the Left Hand and a silkier, more open feel.
On the palate, it is supple and fruit-driven, with ripe plum and cherry carried by fine tannins and a smooth, earthy finish. There is spice and depth, but the pleasure is in its natural ease: generous without becoming heavy, polished without losing its Wairarapa freshness.
For when
The good Pinot comes out before the main course has even reached the table.
Pairs with
Roast chicken, duck breast, pork fillet, lamb rump, mushroom risotto, grilled salmon or beetroot and goats’ cheese tart.
Borthwick Estate is a family-owned Gladstone vineyard with deep farming roots and a clear sense of place. The Right Hand bottling reflects Paddy Borthwick’s own intuitive, thoughtful style, selected from premium parcels of the estate and made in tiny quantities alongside the Left Hand Pinot Noir. Together, they show two personalities from the same Wairarapa vineyard, each with its own rhythm and charm.
