Beerenauslese translates as “berry selection” and is produced from exceptionally ripe grapes that have been partially shrivelled by noble rot. These precious berries are selected individually, concentrating their sweetness, acidity and aromatic intensity. This example combines fruit from the celebrated Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Graacher Himmelreich, Ürziger Würzgarten and Erdener Treppchen vineyards, all rooted in the weathered slate soils of the Middle Mosel.

Dr Loosen is one of the defining estates of the Middle Mosel. The property has remained in the same family for more than 200 years and has been led by Ernst “Erni” Loosen since 1988. His arrival marked the beginning of a remarkable revival, placing the estate among Germany’s most internationally recognised Riesling producers.

The estate owns old, largely ungrafted vines in some of the Mosel’s most celebrated steep vineyards. These sites combine extremely demanding slopes with weathered slate soils that store warmth, drain freely and give the wines their characteristic mineral precision.

Careful vineyard management, strict selection and gentle cellar work allow each wine to express its origins with clarity. Dr Loosen has been a member of the VDP since 1993 and produces the complete spectrum of Riesling, from dry and delicately off-dry styles to exceptionally rare noble sweet wines such as this Beerenauslese.

The 2018 vintage began with early budbreak and flowering, followed by warm conditions that delivered healthy, beautifully ripe fruit. Selected botrytised berries were picked from estate vineyards including Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Graacher Himmelreich, Ürziger Würzgarten and Erdener Treppchen. Dr Loosen typically selects Beerenauslese fruit at considerably higher ripeness than the legal minimum, giving the wine exceptional concentration.

The grapes were pressed as whole bunches before the juice was allowed to settle naturally. Fermentation took place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks and was stopped while a substantial amount of natural grape sugar remained. The resulting richness is balanced by exceptionally high acidity, preserving freshness and giving the wine the ability to develop for decades.
