2018 Peña Roble Reserva Ribera del Duero, Bodegas Resalte de Peñafiel

Ribera del Duero, Spain

Oak Velvet

Dark, smooth and confidently Spanish, this Ribera del Duero Reserva shows Tempranillo in a generous, oak-polished style. Ripe black cherry, plum and blackberry come through with liquorice, sweet spice, vanilla, cedar and a touch of roasted coffee. It has the depth and warmth expected from Ribera, but the fruit still feels clear and inviting rather than overworked.

On the palate, it is full-bodied, rounded and structured, with ripe dark fruit, fine-grained tannins and a long, spicy finish. The Reserva ageing brings softness, polish and savoury depth, making it feel ready for roast meats, slow cooking and winter tables. This is a strong buy for customers who want mature Ribera del Duero character with richness, comfort and classic Tempranillo appeal.

For when: A roast dinner needs a mature Spanish red with warmth, depth and polished oak.

Pairs with: Roast lamb, ribeye steak, beef stew, grilled mushrooms, chorizo, pork shoulder, hard cheeses or smoky aubergine.

Founded in Peñafiel in 2000, Bodegas Resalte specialises in expressive Tempranillo shaped by carefully selected vineyards across Ribera del Duero. Peña Roble Reserva combines the region’s dark-fruited intensity with gravity-led winemaking and extended barrel maturation, resulting in a powerful yet polished red that is now drinking beautifully.

Bodegas Resalte de Peñafiel was founded in 2000 in Peñafiel, one of the key towns of Ribera del Duero. The winery is built around Tempranillo, the region’s defining red grape, and its approach focuses on careful vineyard selection, gentle handling and wines with both concentration and polish.

The estate’s philosophy is modern but not anonymous. Grapes are selected carefully, moved in small boxes and handled with the aim of preserving freshness and identity. In the winery, Resalte is known for gravity-led vinification, avoiding aggressive pumping and helping to extract smoother tannins. Individual vineyards and origins are treated separately so their character can be protected before final blending.

Customers should trust this bottle because it delivers a classic Ribera message in a ready-to-drink Reserva style. Peña Roble Reserva is dark-fruited, oak-aged and structured, but it is also smooth, generous and easy to understand. It is exactly the kind of Spanish red that works well for roast meats, rich stews and customers looking for dependable depth.

The 2018 Peña Roble Reserva is made from 100% Tempranillo from Ribera del Duero. The wine is vinified entirely by gravity, following a gentle handling approach designed to respect the fruit and avoid harsh extraction. The exact 2018 listing gives alcohol at 14.5%, natural cork closure, sulphites and vegan status.

Ageing takes place for 18 months in a combination of French and American oak, with one third of the barrels new. This gives the wine its classic Reserva profile: dark fruit, liquorice, spice, cedar and roasted oak notes, with a smoother, more rounded palate than a younger Ribera.

Now with useful maturity, the wine shows ripe black fruit, softened tannins, savoury spice and well-integrated oak. It still has the structure expected of Ribera del Duero, but bottle age has made it smoother, warmer and ready to enjoy. The winemaking matters because it gives customers a generous Spanish red with depth and polish, without losing the direct appeal of Tempranillo.
