2018 Left Hand Pinot Noir, Paddy Borthwick
Gladstone, Wairarapa, New Zealand
Bramble Thread
The 2018 Left Hand Pinot Noir is the more precise, detailed and quietly cerebral side of Paddy Borthwick’s Pinot story. It opens with raspberry, blackberry, cherry and cedar, then moves into bramble, tobacco, liquorice, smoke and a touch of vanilla. There is plenty of Wairarapa richness here, but it is held in a neat, focused line.
On the palate, the fruit is darkly fruited and polished, with juicy berry depth, seasoned oak spice and fine tannins giving shape without heaviness. It feels composed and deliberate, the kind of Pinot that rewards a large glass, a little air and a table full of good food.
For when
You want Pinot with a little more structure, but still plenty of charm.
Pairs with
Roast duck, mushroom pie, pork belly, lamb cutlets, venison loin, chargrilled aubergine or aged Comté.
Paddy Borthwick’s family vineyard sits in Gladstone, in the heart of Wairarapa, with 27 hectares of vines beside the Ruamahunga River on stony, free-draining alluvial soils. Left Hand and Right Hand are made as two distinct expressions of the estate, with Briony Carnachan’s left-handed, logical and precise approach shaping this bottling, produced in tiny quantities of just 1,730 bottles in the 2018 vintage.
