2018 Hanlin Hill Cane Cut Riesling, Petaluma, 375ml

Clare Valley,

Lusciously sweet and wonderfully bright, Petaluma’s Hanlin Hill Cane Cut Riesling captures the pleasure of citrus in its most indulgent form. Lemon curd, lime marmalade and candied orange peel mingle with honeyed richness, while a delicate sherbet-like lift keeps the aromas fresh and inviting. The character is unmistakably Riesling, with vivid citrus running through every layer of sweetness and giving this little half-bottle plenty of personality.

The palate is silky and concentrated, its generous sweetness balanced by a lively seam of acidity. Honey and preserved citrus spread across the tongue before a tang of lime zest brings definition to the lingering finish. It is a lovely way to round off dinner, equally tempting alongside a citrus dessert or a piece of blue cheese. With bottle age already behind it, this is a wine to enjoy now, served chilled in small glasses and allowed to unfold slowly.

For when: The dinner plates have been cleared, the cheese is on the table, and the conversation deserves another chapter.

Pairs with: Lemon tart, orange and almond cake, baked apricot frangipane, vanilla panna cotta with passion fruit, caramelised pear tart, or creamy blue cheese with walnuts.

Hanlin Hill is one of Clare Valley’s distinguished Riesling vineyards, planted in 1968 in the region’s eastern hills. This sweet bottling explores a different side of the site through the cane-cut technique, concentrating the grapes’ natural sugars and flavours while retaining the citrus character that makes Hanlin Hill so distinctive. The 375ml format is just right for sharing a few small glasses at the end of a meal.

Founded in 1976, Petaluma built its reputation on matching grape varieties to carefully chosen Australian vineyard sites. That philosophy established Riesling in Clare Valley, Chardonnay in the cool Piccadilly Valley of the Adelaide Hills, and Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in Coonawarra as the foundations of its range. Its home today is in Woodside in the Adelaide Hills.

For Riesling, Hanlin Hill is central to the story. The vineyard sits around 500 metres above sea level, with underlying slate geology and a combination of sunny days and cool nights that supports concentrated citrus flavours and naturally bright acidity. These qualities give Petaluma’s Rieslings their distinctive balance of fruit intensity and freshness.

Senior winemaker Allira Lord continues the producer’s emphasis on wines that retain a clear connection to their vineyard origins. Careful site selection and close collaboration between growers and the cellar team remain at the heart of the approach. Across the range, the aim is to preserve the individual character of each variety and place.

This is a sweet Riesling from the Hanlin Hill vineyard in Clare Valley. The cane-cut method involves severing the fruit-bearing canes while leaving the bunches hanging on the trellis. As the grapes lose water, their sugars and flavours become more concentrated before harvest.

That concentration provides the basis for the wine’s luscious character, with residual grape sugar remaining in the finished wine. Riesling’s natural acidity provides the essential counterbalance, bringing freshness and definition to the sweetness. The finished style centres on honeyed citrus, richness and a clean, tangy finish.
