2018 G d’Estournel, Cos d’Estournel

Medoc, Bordeaux, France

Estuary Spice

Generous, fragrant and full of life, the 2018 G d’Estournel opens with ripe plum, blackberry and black cherry, lifted by violet and a refreshing hint of mint. Cedar, cocoa and gentle woodsmoke bring savoury depth, while touches of black pepper, sweet spice and graphite give the fruit definition. There is an inviting warmth to its aromas, balanced by the freshness that distinguishes this northern Médoc vineyard.

The palate is medium-bodied and supple, with juicy dark fruit supported by fine, gently gripping tannins. Lively acidity keeps the generous flavours moving, carrying plum, spice and a subtle saline edge through a satisfying finish. With bottle age bringing its elements together, this is an appealing choice for drinking now: polished enough for a special dinner, yet relaxed and generous enough to open simply because the food deserves it. Further cellaring into the end of the decade remains an option.

For when: A quiet dinner turns into another hour at the table.

Pairs with: Roast lamb with thyme, duck breast with cherry sauce, grilled sirloin with shallot butter, pork shoulder with lentils, mushroom and chestnut pie or aged Gouda.

The 2018 was originally released as Goulée by Cos d’Estournel and is now included in the producer’s G d’Estournel range. Its vineyard occupies land that was once an island in the Gironde estuary, joined to the mainland through historic drainage works. The surrounding water, marshland and cooling breezes remain central to its distinctive character.

Cos d’Estournel takes its name from Louis Gaspard d’Estournel, whose ambition and fascination with distant markets helped shape this distinctive Saint-Estèphe estate. Michel Reybier has owned the property since 2000, investing in its vineyards, cellars and the people behind its wines. G d’Estournel extends that expertise to a separate vineyard in the northern Médoc.
Here, gravel terraces meet clay and limestone slopes close to the Gironde estuary. Cooling air from the water and nearby marshland helps moderate the vineyard’s conditions, while established roots allow the vines to draw on water reserves during dry periods. Merlot brings generosity to the blend, supported by the structure and aromatic detail of the two Cabernet varieties.
Technical director Dominique Arangoïts and the Cos d’Estournel team combine detailed vineyard observation with careful winemaking. At Goulée, light ploughing and attentive management of the vines help maintain balance through changing weather conditions. The resulting wine places ripe fruit, freshness and drinking pleasure at the heart of its style.

The 2018 is a blend of 73% Merlot, 21% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Cabernet Franc from the Goulée vineyard. The vines’ established roots, groundwater reserves and cooling estuary breezes helped them adapt to the season. Cabernet Sauvignon planted in 2012 was beginning to make a more distinct contribution to the wine’s structure.
The vineyard is harvested by hand, and vinification takes place in small, temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats. This allows careful management of the individual lots before blending.
The wine matured in French oak barriques, with 20% new oak. This restrained proportion adds spice and texture while allowing the generous fruit and fresh character of the vineyard to remain prominent.
Alcohol: 13.71%. Recommended drinking window: 2021 to 2030.
