2018 Blanc de Blancs Vintage, Wiston Estate

Sussex, England

This is English Blanc de Blancs with richness, lift and beautiful chalky precision. Lemon zest, green apple and ripe greengage lead the nose, followed by nougat, pastry, toasted almond, grapefruit peel and a gentle smoky edge. It has the brightness and cut of great Chardonnay on chalk, but the 2018 vintage brings extra generosity and depth.

On the palate, it is fine, creamy and wonderfully poised, with citrus energy, orchard fruit and a long, mineral finish. Extended lees ageing gives the wine its bready, savoury complexity, while the acidity keeps everything fresh, precise and food-friendly. A serious English sparkling wine for drinkers who want Champagne-level finesse with a clear South Downs identity.

Wiston Estate is one of the leading names in English sparkling wine, based on the chalky slopes of the South Downs in West Sussex. The Goring family has cared for the estate since 1743, but the wine story began with Pip Goring, who dreamed of planting vines after growing up in South Africa’s Western Cape. That vision became reality in 2006, when the family planted Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier on a south-facing site selected for its chalk soils, aspect and cool-climate potential.

The estate has since become one of England’s most respected sparkling producers, known for precision, patience and traditional-method wines with real character. Wiston’s original Coquard press, old oak, stainless steel and long lees ageing all play a part, but the real signature is the vineyard: bright acidity, chalky freshness and graceful texture.

For customers, Wiston offers serious English sparkling wine with family heritage, regional identity and a track record of top-level recognition.

The 2018 Blanc de Blancs Vintage is 100% Chardonnay from Wiston Estate’s original vineyard in West Sussex. The vines grow on flint-scattered soils over chalk, giving the wine its citrus precision, mineral freshness and fine-boned structure.

The 2018 harvest has become one of the landmark years for English wine. A strong flowering period and warm, settled weather gave excellent ripeness, with the grapes hand-harvested in October. Whole bunches were gently pressed in Wiston’s Coquard press, then fermented in a mix of old French barrels and stainless steel tanks. The base wine spent nine months on lees before bottling in 2019, followed by four to five years of ageing on lees in bottle before disgorgement and further time on cork.

The result is mature enough to show nougat, pastry, almond and savoury depth, but still full of citrus lift and chalky freshness. It is ready to drink now, especially with seafood, roast poultry or creamy dishes, yet it has the balance and structure to continue ageing well. Alcohol is 12%.
