2017 Pinot Noir, Ataraxia
Hemel-en-Aarde, Walker Bay, Western Cape, South Africa
Ridge Silk
Ataraxia’s 2017 Pinot Noir is mature Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge Pinot with a beautifully lifted, savoury perfume. Red cherry, raspberry, pomegranate and wild strawberry lead the way, followed by forest floor, dried herbs, soft spice and a gentle touch of new oak. It feels poised and quietly sensual, with the cool coastal character of the Ridge giving the wine freshness rather than weight.
On the palate, it is silky, elegant and finely shaped, with bright red fruit now softened by age into tea leaf, earth, spice and a little smoky complexity. The tannins are smooth and discreet, the acidity still fresh, and the finish long, savoury and gently persistent. Drink now with a little air and let its calm, Burgundian side come through.
For when
A dinner needs Pinot with maturity, perfume and a little Cape cool.
Pairs with
Roast duck, grilled quail, pork belly, mushroom risotto, seared tuna, venison, char siu pork or soft washed-rind cheese.
Ataraxia sits high in the Hemel-en-Aarde, on The Skyfields, one of South Africa’s most striking cool-climate wine landscapes. Founded in 2004 by Kevin and Hanli Grant, the estate has become a benchmark for refined Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, shaped by stony, clay-rich Bokkeveld shale soils, maritime influence and Kevin’s thoughtful, terroir-led approach. This 2017 captures the Ataraxia signature beautifully: elegant, expressive and quietly serious.
