Domaine de l’Eglise wine has been among the most sought after in Pomerol for many years.

Black cherry, blackberry and ripe plum lead the aroma, joined by violet, cocoa, tobacco leaf and a subtle earthy note of truffle. There is a quiet confidence to it, combining Pomerol’s natural richness with the savoury detail and restraint of a cooler Bordeaux vintage.

The palate is medium to full-bodied, with fresh dark fruit, fine silky tannins and a firm but beautifully integrated structure. Cherry and plum return through the finish, edged with chocolate and gently toasted cedar. Now showing lovely maturity, this is a polished, reassuringly classic Pomerol that offers immediate pleasure and serious Right Bank pedigree.

For when: A candlelit dinner that deserves proper claret.

Château du Domaine de l’Église occupies seven hectares in the heart of the Pomerol plateau, beneath the village church and less than two kilometres from Pétrus. Its gravel, clay and iron-rich soils are particularly well suited to Merlot, producing wines known for their generous fruit, silky texture and elegant structure.

Château du Domaine de l’Église can trace its history to 1589, making it one of Pomerol’s oldest documented vineyards. Formerly known as Domaine de la Porte Rouge, the property once belonged to the Hospitallers of Saint John of Jerusalem and provided shelter for pilgrims travelling towards Santiago de Compostela. It was separated from the church during the French Revolution and acquired by Émile Castéja in 1973.

Today, the estate is owned by Philippe Castéja and his sister, Chantal Castéja Prében-Hansen. The vineyard covers seven hectares in the centre of the Pomerol plateau, with vines averaging around 40 years old planted on gravel, clay and iron-rich soils. Merlot dominates, accompanied by a small proportion of Cabernet Franc.

The same experienced team responsible for Château Trotte-Vieille oversees the wine, bringing considerable precision to both vineyard and cellar. Sustainable farming has become increasingly central, with soil cultivation, mechanical weed control and careful canopy management used to support vine health. The estate achieved HVE Level 3 certification in 2021. For customers seeking the plushness and perfume of Pomerol with genuine history and an understated reputation, Domaine de l’Église is a particularly compelling bottle.

Fermentation took place in thermo regulated vats, followed by maturation in French oak barriques for a period of 16 to 18 months. 60% of the barriques were new.
