2016 Basket Press Cabernet Sauvignon, Reynella

McLaren Vale, Australia

The Long Shadow

Deep, savoury and impressively composed, this mature McLaren Vale Cabernet opens with blackberry, mulberry and cassis, layered with violet, dried mint, eucalyptus, clove and a touch of saddle leather. Time in bottle has brought the wine together beautifully, revealing tobacco leaf, warm earth and dried Mediterranean herbs beneath its concentrated dark fruit.

The palate remains powerful and densely structured, with black plum, dark chocolate and liquorice framed by firm, finely shaped tannins. Notes of bay leaf, black olive and graphite bring classical Cabernet definition, while polished French oak supports a remarkably long, mineral and savoury finish. Mature, commanding and still full of life.

For when: The roast is resting, and nobody is in a hurry to leave the table.

Pairs with: Slow-roasted lamb shoulder, ribeye steak, beef Wellington, venison, mushroom pie or mature hard cheeses.

Produced from selected parcels of Cabernet Sauvignon grown in McLaren Vale during an outstanding vintage, this is a compelling example of warm-climate Cabernet with genuine structure and longevity. Nearly a decade of bottle development has softened its youthful concentration while preserving the grip, freshness and depth required for further ageing.

Reynella stands at the beginning of South Australia’s winemaking story. John Reynell established the property in 1838 and became one of McLaren Vale’s earliest vineyard pioneers. In 1850, a young Thomas Hardy joined him as an apprentice before establishing his own winery three years later.

Hardys acquired Château Reynella in 1982 and restored the historic property, reconnecting the company with the place where Thomas Hardy’s Australian winemaking career began. Reynella remains home to South Australia’s oldest operating wine cellar and a century-old basket press that continues to be used in the production of its wines.

The Reynella range celebrates traditional McLaren Vale winemaking through carefully selected fruit, open fermentation and gentle basket pressing. The resulting wines combine regional generosity with firm structure, savoury complexity and an impressive ability to age.

Selected parcels of Cabernet Sauvignon were hand-picked and berry sorted before being fermented separately in small, traditional open fermenters. The wine was then gently basket pressed, allowing colour, flavour and tannin to be extracted without excessive harshness.

The wine matured for 14 months in high-quality French oak, adding cedar, spice and structure while allowing the dark fruit and savoury Cabernet character to remain central. It was bottled under screw cap to preserve freshness and support its long-term development.

Alcohol: 14%. Recommended drinking window: now to 2032.
