2015 to 2021 Balthasar Shiraz Vertical Case, Grant Burge

Eden Valley, Australia

Eden After Dark

Four vintages of Grant Burge’s commanding Eden Valley Shiraz, showing how Balthasar develops from youthful intensity into deep, savoury maturity. The 2015 opens with ripe plum, black pepper, nutmeg, dark chocolate and smoked meat. The celebrated 2018 is broader and more perfumed, bringing blueberry, black cherry, eucalyptus and white pepper wrapped in clove, cinnamon and cedar. The 2019 turns towards plum, spiced bun, ginger, earth and caraway, while the 2021 is vivid with dark cherry, black plum, cocoa and cool mineral detail.

Each vintage delivers serious fruit and structure, but the differences make this case fascinating. The 2015 is rich, smoky, and beautifully settled; 2018 is powerful, broad-shouldered, and velvety; 2019 has firm, purposeful tannins and a long, savoury drive; and 2021 combines the greatest concentration with freshness, precision, and youthful energy. Together, they show the distinctive character of Eden Valley Shiraz: dark and generous, but lifted by altitude, peppery spice and a cooler line of acidity. A compelling vertical for drinking, comparing and cellaring.

The vintages

2015: Mature and savoury, with ripe plum, raspberry, black pepper, nutmeg, dark chocolate, vanilla and smoked meat supported by fine, softened tannins.

2018: Deep, perfumed and powerful, combining blueberry and black cherry with eucalyptus, white pepper, thyme and polished cedar spice.

2019: Dark and complex, with plum, chocolate, ginger, caraway and earthy spice carried by firm tannins and a persistent finish.

2021: Concentrated yet energetic, delivering dark cherry, black plum, cocoa and dried spice with bright acidity, graceful structure and considerable cellaring potential.

Grant Burge’s Balthasar is a dedicated expression of Eden Valley Shiraz. The region’s higher elevation and cooler growing conditions bring aromatic lift, freshness and peppery definition, complementing the depth and concentration associated with the wider Barossa. The result is Shiraz with power and presence, but also balance, savoury complexity and the structure to age confidently.

Grant Burge Wines was established in 1988 by fifth-generation Barossa winemaker Grant Burge, although the family’s connection with the region stretches back to the nineteenth century. Meshach Burge began making wine in 1865, laying the foundations for a name now closely associated with generous, expressive South Australian wines.

Vineyards across the Barossa and Eden Valleys give the winemaking team access to contrasting landscapes. The warmer Barossa floor produces depth and ripe fruit, while Eden Valley rises to around 500 metres in places, bringing cooler temperatures, slower ripening and greater aromatic definition. Its rocky soils and elevated vineyards are particularly well suited to Shiraz, producing wines with dark fruit, peppery spice, freshness and firm structure.

Balthasar sits within the Wines of Distinction range and represents Grant Burge’s focused expression of Eden Valley Shiraz. It combines the richness customers expect from South Australia with a cooler, more savoury personality. Careful extraction and well-judged French oak give the wine polish without losing the character of the fruit. This four-vintage case demonstrates both the consistency of Balthasar and its ability to develop impressive complexity with time in bottle.

All four vintages are made from 100% Shiraz grown in Eden Valley. The fruit is fermented in stainless steel, with regular pump-overs used to extract colour, flavour and tannin before gentle pressing. French oak maturation builds texture and spice while preserving the wine’s dark fruit and cooler regional character.

The 2015 was assembled from four parcels across three Eden Valley vineyards and matured in French oak. The 2018 and 2019 spent 18 months in French oak hogsheads and puncheons, including 38% new oak. The 2021 matured for 19 months in French oak, with 30% new barrels. These changes in fruit selection, vintage conditions and oak integration are part of what makes tasting the four releases together so rewarding.
