2015 Rioja Reserva, Finca Nueva

Rioja, Spain

Finca Nueva’s 2015 Rioja Reserva is mature Tempranillo with all the comfort of classic Rioja, but shaped with a fresher, more contemporary hand. The nose is deep and inviting, with black cherry, ripe plum, cassis and violet, layered with vanilla, cedar, cigar box, dried herbs, anise and a gentle touch of dark chocolate.

On the palate, it is full, smooth and savoury, with ripe fruit now softened by bottle age into a mellow, polished register. The tannins are structured but silky, the oak is nicely folded into the wine, and the finish carries cherry, plum, sweet spice and a subtle balsamic lift. This is Rioja in a very satisfying place: ready to drink, generous at the table and quietly reassuring.

For when
A roast dinner needs mature Rioja charm without opening the serious cellar.

Pairs with
Roast lamb, pork shoulder, game sausage cassoulet, lamb ragù, grilled mushrooms, Manchego, chorizo, veal cutlets, meatballs or tomato-rich pasta.

Finca Nueva is Miguel Ángel de Gregorio’s more playful Rioja project, created to deliver traditional regional styles with freshness, polish and immediate pleasure. Best known for the highly regarded Finca Allende, De Gregorio brings serious winemaking pedigree to a wine designed for generous drinking rather than grand ceremony. This Reserva shows the point beautifully: mature Tempranillo, oak-aged depth, savoury Rioja character and a level of quality that feels very persuasive for the price.

Finca Nueva is the more accessible, fruit-forward project of Miguel Ángel de Gregorio, one of Rioja’s most respected modern winemakers and the name behind the acclaimed Finca Allende estate. Based in Rioja Alta, Finca Nueva was created to offer wines with the regional identity of Rioja, but with a fresher, more immediate style and outstanding everyday appeal.

The project gained extra depth in 2014 with the acquisition of the former Bodegas Bretón facilities in Navarrete, a meaningful move because this was where Miguel Ángel began his winemaking career. Finca Nueva sources fruit from several Rioja villages, including Fuenmayor, Navarrete, San Asensio and Briones, with a particular interest in the cooler northern exposure of many vineyards on the right bank of the Ebro.

The range is deliberately broad and approachable, covering Viura, rosé, Vendimia, Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva. The Crianza is one of its clearest statements: classic Rioja shape, Tempranillo fruit, oak polish and the kind of value that gives customers confidence to buy by the case.

The 2015 Reserva is made from 100% Tempranillo grown in Rioja Alta. The vineyards are farmed with a focus on freshness and balance, with many parcels set on hillsides facing north, north-east and north-west to capture Atlantic influence. These exposures help moderate ripeness and preserve lift in the wine, especially important in a warmer, ripe-fruited vintage such as 2015.

Fermentation takes place in stainless steel, followed by extended maceration on the skins to build colour, flavour and structure. Malolactic fermentation is completed before the wine is moved to barrel. The finished wine is aged underground in French oak barrels, with a long élevage that brings cedar, vanilla, cigar box and spice while keeping the fruit clear and polished.

The 2015 Rioja vintage was officially rated Very Good, producing ripe, fresh and elegant wines with good ageing potential. In this bottle, that translates into ripe black cherry and plum fruit, structured tannins, integrated oak and a savoury, ready-to-drink maturity.
