2015 Rioja Reserva, Finca Nueva
Rioja, Spain
Finca Nueva’s 2015 Rioja Reserva is mature Tempranillo with all the comfort of classic Rioja, but shaped with a fresher, more contemporary hand. The nose is deep and inviting, with black cherry, ripe plum, cassis and violet, layered with vanilla, cedar, cigar box, dried herbs, anise and a gentle touch of dark chocolate.
On the palate, it is full, smooth and savoury, with ripe fruit now softened by bottle age into a mellow, polished register. The tannins are structured but silky, the oak is nicely folded into the wine, and the finish carries cherry, plum, sweet spice and a subtle balsamic lift. This is Rioja in a very satisfying place: ready to drink, generous at the table and quietly reassuring.
For when
A roast dinner needs mature Rioja charm without opening the serious cellar.
Pairs with
Roast lamb, pork shoulder, game sausage cassoulet, lamb ragù, grilled mushrooms, Manchego, chorizo, veal cutlets, meatballs or tomato-rich pasta.
Finca Nueva is Miguel Ángel de Gregorio’s more playful Rioja project, created to deliver traditional regional styles with freshness, polish and immediate pleasure. Best known for the highly regarded Finca Allende, De Gregorio brings serious winemaking pedigree to a wine designed for generous drinking rather than grand ceremony. This Reserva shows the point beautifully: mature Tempranillo, oak-aged depth, savoury Rioja character and a level of quality that feels very persuasive for the price.
