2015 Tronquoy-Lalande, Château Tronquoy-Lalande

Saint-Estèphe, Bordeaux, France

Gravel and Ember

Generous, dark-fruited and reassuringly substantial, the 2015 Tronquoy-Lalande opens with blackcurrant, black cherry and ripe plum, followed by liquorice, tobacco and a touch of cedar. A cool minty note threads through the richness, while hints of dried rose, graphite and gently smoked herbs add savoury detail. The oak sits comfortably behind the fruit, lending warmth and spice to a bouquet that becomes increasingly expressive with air.

The palate has a broad, rounded centre, with concentrated berry fruit supported by firm, finely grained tannins and a refreshing line of acidity. Merlot brings flesh and generosity, while the Cabernet varieties give definition and a lingering savoury grip. There is plenty to enjoy with a substantial meal now, especially after decanting, but this remains a structured Saint-Estèphe with years of development ahead. Its combination of satisfying depth, freshness and classical character makes it a rewarding bottle for both the dinner table and the cellar.

For when: Sunday lunch deserves a proper claret and an unhurried afternoon.

Pairs with: Roast rib of beef with Yorkshire pudding, grilled lamb chops with rosemary, venison casserole with juniper, steak with béarnaise sauce, slow-braised ox cheeks or mushroom and lentil pie.

Tronquoy-Lalande takes its name from François Tronquoy, its first owner, and La Lande, the historic vineyard site. Merlot has an unusually important role for this part of the Médoc, thriving in the estate’s gravel-and-clay soils and bringing a generous centre to the wine’s Saint-Estèphe structure.

Château Tronquoy-Lalande’s origins lie in the eighteenth century, when the estate developed around a château designed by Victor Louis, architect of Bordeaux’s Grand Théâtre. Martin and Olivier Bouygues acquired the property in 2006, the same year they purchased nearby Château Montrose. Their investment brought extensive improvements, including a new vat house and barrel cellar completed in 2010.
The vineyard covers approximately 30 hectares in a continuous block on Saint-Estèphe’s gravel outcrops. Deep layers of gravel and clay balance drainage with water retention, helping the vines through both wet periods and dry summers. The nearby Gironde estuary moderates temperatures, while the clay-rich soils are particularly well suited to Merlot.
Today, Yves Delsol manages the estate under Pierre Graffeuille’s supervision. Traditional soil cultivation, close attention to individual parcels and carefully controlled extraction underpin the approach. Ploughing manages weeds and aerates the ground, while precise cellar work aims to preserve generous fruit without losing the structure that gives these wines their longevity.

The 2015 blends 55% Merlot, 37% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc. A dry June and July slowed vine growth, followed by alternating showers and fine weather during August and September. The estate’s deep gravel provided valuable drainage. Harvest ran from 16 September to 8 October, with selection within individual parcels allowing fruit to be picked at the desired ripeness.
Fermentation took place in tank, with temperatures deliberately kept relatively low to preserve aromatic freshness. Gentle extraction and controlled pumping over developed colour and structure while avoiding harsh tannins.
The wine matured for 12 months in French oak barrels, with approximately 30% new oak. This added subtle spice and helped bring the fruit and tannins together, retaining the concentration and freshness needed for further bottle ageing.
Alcohol: 14%. Residual sugar: 1.3g/L. Recommended drinking window: 2026–2038.
