2014 Opus One, Opus One Winery

Napa Valley and California, France

Oakville in Concert

Perfumed, composed and quietly commanding, the 2014 Opus One opens with cassis, blackberry and red cherry, lifted by violets, rose petals and fresh garden herbs. Cedar, tobacco leaf and woodland notes lend a savoury depth, while black olive, baking spice and mocha unfold beneath the fruit. There is a remarkable sense of detail here, with Napa’s ripeness beautifully framed by floral freshness and carefully integrated French oak.

The palate is silky on entry, building into a concentrated, medium-to-full-bodied wine with finely textured tannins and a firm underlying structure. Bright acidity brings definition to the dark fruit, carrying it through a long finish of spice, earth and dark chocolate. Already rewarding with time in the glass, it retains the energy and depth for further cellaring. For a celebratory dinner or a carefully chosen addition to the cellar, this is Opus One with both presence and finesse.

For when: The occasion calls for the bottle you have been waiting to open.

Pairs with: Beef Wellington, rosemary-roasted rack of lamb, venison loin with a red wine jus, grilled ribeye with porcini butter, braised beef short ribs or aged Comté.

Opus One takes its name from the musical term for a composer’s first numbered work, reflecting the shared ambition of Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild. Their project brought Bordeaux’s blending tradition to Napa Valley, with Oakville vineyards providing its distinctive Californian identity. The 2014 captures that partnership particularly well, combining generous fruit with aromatic complexity and a finely controlled structure.

Opus One began with a meeting between Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild in 1978. Bringing together one of Napa Valley’s pioneering figures and the proprietor of Château Mouton Rothschild, their ambition was to create a single exceptional wine. The first vintage followed in 1979, establishing a partnership that became an important chapter in the international recognition of Californian wine.
The estate’s historic vineyard foundation comprises four parcels in western Oakville. Two lie within the celebrated To Kalon Vineyard, complemented by the Ballestra and River parcels surrounding the winery. These sites provide the different components of the blend, allowing the team to balance fruit intensity, perfume and tannin structure.
Michael Silacci, who guided the 2014 vintage, has shaped the estate’s vineyard-led approach for a quarter of a century, with 2026 marking his final harvest at Opus One. Careful selection and detailed blending remain central to the style, alongside an evolving commitment to regenerative farming, biodiversity and restoration of the Napa River ecosystem.

The 2014 combines 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petit Verdot, 6% Cabernet Franc, 5% Merlot and 2% Malbec from the estate’s Oakville vineyards. The season began with the earliest budbreak in the property’s history at that time. A largely favourable growing season followed, and harvesting ran from 5 September to 7 October, with a brief pause after rain.
Hand-harvesting and careful sorting formed part of the estate’s approach to selecting the fruit. Skin contact lasted 20 days, developing the colour, flavour and tannin structure that underpin the wine’s concentration and ageing potential.
The wine matured for 18 months in 100% new French oak barrels. This extended élevage helped refine its texture and added the subtle spice and mocha nuances woven through the fruit. Further bottle ageing has brought greater integration while preserving the vintage’s freshness and firm structure.
Alcohol: 14.5%. Recommended drinking window: 2026 to 2039.
