2013 to 2021 The Holy Trinity GSM Vertical Case, Grant Burge

Barossa Valley, Australia

Trinity Through Time

Four vintages of one of the Barossa Valley’s most enduring blends, revealing how Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvèdre change with vintage and bottle age. Across the case, aromas move from the ripe plum, liqueur cherry, fruitcake, and earthy spice of 2013 to the violets, raspberry, and savoury detail of 2019. The 2020 brings lavender, blackberry, ginger and mocha, while the youthful 2021 is lifted by red cherry, redcurrant, rose, bramble and aniseed.

The real pleasure is in tasting the progression. The 2013 is mellow, generous, and beautifully mature; 2019 combines richness with fragrant fruit and fine, sandy tannins; 2020 is darker, silkier, and more polished; and 2021 delivers the greatest freshness, energy, and precision. Together, they offer a fascinating snapshot of modern Barossa GSM, from evolved savoury complexity to youthful fruit and structure. A rare chance to follow one wine through four distinctive seasons, without waiting years for your own cellar to do the work.

For when: You want to turn dinner into a proper comparative tasting.

Pairs with: Slow-roasted lamb shoulder, duck confit, barbecue beef ribs, pork belly, smoky aubergine, mushroom Wellington or a generous cheeseboard.

Grant Burge is one of the Barossa Valley’s most recognised names, with five generations of family involvement in grape growing and winemaking. The Holy Trinity is a longstanding expression of the region’s relationship with Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvèdre, drawing on mature, predominantly dry-grown vineyards to combine generous fruit with fragrance, savoury spice and reliable structure.

Grant Burge Wines was established in 1988 by fifth-generation Barossa winemaker Grant Burge, although the family’s connection with the region stretches back to the nineteenth century. Meshach Burge began making wine in 1865, creating a legacy that successive generations developed across some of South Australia’s most celebrated vineyards.

The range draws on sites throughout the Barossa and Eden Valleys. Warmer vineyards on the valley floor provide depth, ripeness and generous fruit, while higher and cooler locations contribute fragrance, freshness and definition. Important vineyard names within the portfolio include Filsell, Chaff Mill, Corryton Park and Lily Farm, alongside parcels of mature and old vines that bring concentration and regional character.

Grant Burge wines are known for their unmistakable Barossa generosity, but the best bottles also possess the balance and structure required to mature gracefully. The Holy Trinity captures this particularly well. Grenache brings perfume and supple red fruit, Shiraz contributes depth and richness, and Mourvèdre adds darker spice, savoury complexity and tannin. This four-vintage case demonstrates both the consistency of that approach and the subtle ways each growing season leaves its mark.

Each vintage is a Barossa Valley blend of Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvèdre, with the final proportions adjusted to reflect the strengths of the season. The 2013 combines 38% Grenache, 36% Shiraz and 26% Mourvèdre; 2019 is 42% Grenache, 31% Shiraz and 27% Mourvèdre; 2020 is an almost equal blend at 34%, 33% and 33%; and 2021 brings together 40% Grenache, 40% Shiraz and 20% Mourvèdre.

Fruit is drawn predominantly from mature, dry-grown Barossa vineyards. Selected parcels are fermented separately, with concrete fermentation and extended skin contact used where appropriate to build texture and structure. Maturation takes place primarily in seasoned French oak puncheons and large foudres, allowing the tannins to soften while preserving the perfume, fruit and individual character of each vintage.
