2011 Château Rauzan-Ségla, Château Rauzan-Ségla
Margaux, Bordeaux, France
Autumn in Margaux
Fragrant, composed and richly layered, the 2011 Rauzan-Ségla brings together blackcurrant, red plum and blackberry with dried roses, cedar and sandalwood. Bottle age has added a savoury complexity of woodland floor, truffle and soft leather, while hints of mint, graphite and warm spice keep the bouquet wonderfully detailed. This is mature Margaux with plenty of fruit still at its heart, offering something new with each return to the glass.
The palate is medium-bodied, with a generous core of berry fruit framed by finely grained, gently chewy tannins. Fresh acidity gives definition to the richer flavours, carrying earthy notes, subtle oak and a mineral edge through a persistent finish. There is real pleasure here now, particularly alongside roast meats or mushrooms, yet enough structure to reward further cellaring. A compelling choice for anyone who loves the fragrance and savoury depth that patient ageing brings to fine Bordeaux.
For when: Sunday lunch becomes a long afternoon around the table.
Pairs with: Roast lamb with rosemary, beef fillet with wild mushrooms, duck confit with lentils, venison casserole, mushroom and chestnut pithivier or aged Comté.
Rauzan-Ségla is a Second Growth from the 1855 classification, with a reputation built on the interplay of floral delicacy and Cabernet Sauvignon structure. The demanding 2011 season brought hail and low yields, making careful selection particularly important. The resulting wine offers a distinctive opportunity to enjoy this historic Margaux estate with the added complexity of bottle age.
