2011 Chateau Phelan Segur, Saint-Estephe
Saint-Estèphe, Bordeaux, France
Deep garnet with a soft brick rim, this 2011 Phélan Ségur shows all the understated class of mature Saint-Estèphe. The nose opens with notes of blackcurrant, cedar, and tobacco leaf, layered with graphite, cocoa, and a hint of violet. On the palate, it’s supple yet structured with ripe cassis and dark plum framed by fine-grained tannins and a touch of savoury spice. Balanced, elegant, and beginning to show beautiful secondary complexity, it finishes long, smoky, and refined.
For when: dinner’s slow, the lights are low, and the conversation runs deep.
Pairs with: roast beef, lamb cutlets, or hard cheeses.
If this wine were a suit, it’d be Savile Row - timeless, understated, and perfectly fitted.
Château Phélan Ségur, founded in the early 19th century by Irishman Bernard Phelan, is one of Saint-Estèphe’s most respected estates. Its 70 hectares of gravel and clay soils sit between Calon-Ségur and Montrose, producing Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot of power and poise. The 2011 vintage was challenging for some but was handled here with finesse, yielding a wine of precision and balance that has aged gracefully over a decade.

Founded in the early 19th century by Bernard Phelan, an Irish wine merchant who settled in Bordeaux, Château Phélan Ségur has become one of the most admired names in Saint-Estèphe. The estate’s 70 hectares of vines stretch across gravel and clay slopes overlooking the Gironde estuary, ideally positioned between the famed crus of Château Montrose and Château Calon-Ségur.
Phélan Ségur’s hallmark is elegance within power - Cabernet-led wines that deliver Saint-Estèphe’s structure and depth with polish and poise. The vineyard is planted predominantly to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with small parcels of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, all farmed sustainably under the estate’s strong environmental commitments.
In the cellar, precision is key. Grapes are sorted parcel by parcel, vinified gently, and matured in French oak, typically 50% new, to preserve balance and aromatic clarity. Under the guidance of Director Véronique Dausse, Phélan Ségur continues to refine its style, producing wines that combine refined tannins, dark fruit purity, and a subtle maritime freshness that reflects its unique terroir.
From recent standout vintages like 2018 and 2019 to mature releases such as 2011, Château Phélan Ségur exemplifies the quiet confidence of modern Saint-Estèphe, wines built for the table, crafted for time.
