2010 Magallanes Ribera del Duero, César Muñoz
Castilla León and Ribera del Duero, Spain
This is mature Ribera del Duero with depth, polish and a dark, magnetic pull. Made from old-vine Tempranillo, it opens with black cherry, blackberry, plum and cassis, before vanilla, cedar, tobacco, cocoa, leather and sweet spice begin to unfold. The fruit is now mellow and composed, but still carries the richness and structure of a serious Ribera.
The palate is broad, smooth and beautifully settled, with ripe black fruit, polished tannins and a fresh line of acidity keeping everything alive. The oak has melted into the wine, bringing chocolate, spice and savoury warmth rather than weight. Think old leather, black fruit compote, cedar box and a long, quietly powerful finish.
For when you want a mature Spanish red with gravitas, warmth and proper old-vine depth.
Pairs with roast lamb, rib of beef, venison, mushroom stew, aged manchego, chargrilled pork, or anything slow-cooked with garlic and herbs.
If this wine were… a compass, it would be brass and dark wood, pointing steadily towards a candlelit table in Castilla y León.
Selección César Muñoz is a personal project from winemaker César Muñoz, focused on old-vine Tempranillo from high-altitude sites in Ribera del Duero. Magallanes comes from very old vines, around a century in age, grown in the cooler eastern reaches of the appellation, where altitude helps preserve freshness and structure. The wine is shaped in a traditional but precise style, with careful selection, ageing in French oak and a focus on balanced power rather than excess.
