2003 Rudesheimer Berg Roseneck Riesling Spatlese, Weingut Leitz

Rheingau, Germany

From the sun-drenched terraces of Rüdesheim’s famed Berg Roseneck vineyard comes a Riesling that captures the full radiance of the hot 2003 vintage. Lush aromas of ripe apricot, baked peach and candied citrus peel rise from the glass, wrapped in notes of honey, chamomile and a faint whisper of slate. The palate is voluptuous yet beautifully balanced, with a silken texture and sweetness offset by the gentle pull of minerality. Time has turned the fruit golden and the edges mellow, a mature Spätlese that glows with warmth, generosity and quiet poise.

For when: dessert’s done but the evening isn’t.
Pairs with: blue cheese, foie gras, or just the last light of the day.
If this wine were: a song, it’d be Norah Jones on vinyl - smooth, nostalgic, endlessly soothing.

Weingut Leitz, based in Rüdesheim am Rhein, stands as one of the modern icons of the Rheingau. Under Johannes Leitz’s leadership since the 1980s, the estate has become a standard-bearer for precision and purity, crafting Rieslings that balance ripeness with striking freshness, even in challenging years. The steep, south-facing slopes of Berg Roseneck, composed of quartzite and slate yield wines of remarkable aromatic lift and mineral length. In 2003, a year marked by intense summer heat, Leitz achieved a rare harmony: a Spätlese with richness, structure and age-worthy grace that continues to sing more than two decades on.

Perched above the Rhine in the storybook town of Rüdesheim, Weingut Leitz has become one of Germany’s modern Riesling powerhouses, a blend of deep tradition, meticulous craftsmanship, and a quietly adventurous spirit. Johannes Leitz, who took over the family estate in 1985, has elevated it from a small local winery to an international benchmark, all while remaining steadfastly committed to expressing the character of his native Rheingau vineyards.

Leitz’s vineyards climb some of the region’s most iconic south-facing slopes, Berg Schlossberg, Berg Rottland, Berg Roseneck, and Magdalenenkreuz, each with its own soil fingerprint of slate, quartzite, or loess. These steep, hand-tended parcels harness the full drama of the landscape: dizzying elevations, radiant sunlight, and the cooling influence of the Rhine below. The result is Riesling in all its guises, from bone-dry and chiselled to late-harvest wines of unctuous sweetness and crystalline balance.

Johannes Leitz is renowned for his precision. Fermentations are cool and slow, mostly in stainless steel, preserving purity and freshness, while select cuvées see gentle ageing on fine lees for added texture. His philosophy is simple: minimal intervention, maximum expression. Each wine speaks fluently of its site — whether the mineral tension of Berg Roseneck or the generous charm of Magdalenenkreuz. Together they form a portrait of the Rheingau at its most honest and uplifting: wines that are both timeless and unmistakably of their place.
