2002 Semillon, Mount Horrocks
Clare Valley, Australia
The Time Capsule
Mature, golden and beautifully composed, this Clare Valley Semillon shows just how gracefully the variety can evolve. Peach, apricot, lemon zest and honeyed citrus sit beside notes of roasted almond, beeswax, vanilla custard and gentle toast, giving the wine a wonderful sense of depth without losing its line of freshness. It feels creamy and richly textured, yet still bright, lifted and alive.
The palate is smooth, layered and quietly luxurious, with mellow fruit, nutty complexity and a tangy lemon thread carrying the finish. At more than two decades old, it has moved beyond simple fruit into something far more contemplative: savoury, glowing and deeply satisfying, with the calm confidence of a wine that has aged on its own terms.
For when: the evening calls for a white wine with history, texture and quiet grandeur.
Pairs with: roast chicken, grilled lobster, scallops, pork with apple, mushroom risotto, aged cheddar or almond-led vegetarian dishes.
Mount Horrocks is the Clare Valley estate of Stephanie Toole, based in Auburn and known for small-production wines with precision, texture, and real-food appeal. The historic Auburn Railway Station became the winery’s cellar door in the late 1990s, giving the estate one of the region’s most distinctive homes. Its Semillon reflects the cool, bright character of Watervale, bringing richness and restraint together in a style that ages with remarkable grace.
