2000 Syrah ‘Case Via’, Fontodi
Chianti Classico, Tuscany, Italy
Tuscan Smoke
Case Via Syrah from Fontodi is never shy, and the 2000 has moved into a wonderfully mature register. Dark cherry, blackberry, plum, black pepper, smoked meat, leather, liquorice and warm earth all come through, with a faint violet lift still peeking out from behind the savoury depth.
On the palate, it is full, broad and velvety, with the richness of ripe Syrah softened by time. The tannins are now rounded and mellow, the fruit has turned dark and spiced, and the finish carries pepper, tobacco, roasted herbs and a gentle mineral grip. A serious Tuscan red for anyone who likes their Syrah with age, warmth and authority.
For when
A cold evening calls for something dark, generous and slow-burning.
Pairs with
Roast lamb, beef shin, wild boar, venison stew, grilled sausages, rib of beef, lentils with pancetta or aged Parmesan.
If this wine were…
A wood-fired hearth in a stone farmhouse after midnight.
Fontodi is best known for Sangiovese, but Case Via Syrah shows the estate’s ambition beyond the expected. Grown from the Case Via and Pecille vineyards in Panzano, this small-production Syrah comes from Fontodi’s Conca d’Oro landscape, where the estate’s own vineyards and careful, territory-led approach give even an international grape a distinctly Tuscan accent.
