Velvet Pact

This is a mature Super Tuscan with its jacket off and its stories ready. The 2000 50&50 brings together dark cherry, plum, cassis, dried violets, tobacco, cedar, leather and sweet spice, with that lovely aged-Tuscan glow where fruit, savour and time all seem to settle into the same glass.

On the palate, it is plush but now beautifully softened, with Merlot’s velvety depth wrapped around Sangiovese’s savoury lift. The tannins have eased into a polished frame, the fruit has turned darker and more autumnal, and the finish carries spice, cigar box, balsamic richness and a final echo of black cherry.

50&50 is one of Tuscany’s most characterful collaborations, born in 1988 from the friendship between Avignonesi in Montepulciano and Capannelle in Chianti Classico. Its idea is simple but brilliant: unite Merlot and Sangiovese, two estates and two Tuscan identities, while letting both keep their voice. That sense of balance and partnership is exactly what makes this mature bottle feel so quietly special.
