2025 Malbec 'Terroir Unico', Zorzal

Gualtallary, Valle de Uco, Mendoza, Argentina

“Pure Mountain Malbec.”

Born high in Gualtallary at around 1,350m altitude, this is Malbec with lift, clarity and a real mineral snap. Ripe blackberry, blueberry and black cherry lead the nose, layered with lavender, violet, crushed stone, black earth and a subtle gunpowder edge. It has plenty of dark-fruited Mendoza appeal, but the feel is fresh, vertical and precise rather than heavy.

On the palate, it is juicy and expressive, with rounded tannins, bright acidity and a clean line of mineral drive through the finish. Native yeast fermentation and concrete ageing keep the focus firmly on fruit and place, letting the calcium-rich soils and cool Andean nights do the talking. Honest, focused and beautifully poised, this is Malbec in its most transparent and high-altitude form.

For when
A midweek steak deserves mountain freshness.

Pairs with
Chargrilled steak, lamb chops, beef empanadas, smoky aubergine, black bean chilli, mushroom tacos, lentil stew or aged cheddar.

Zorzal has become one of Gualtallary’s most exciting voices, known for wines that favour freshness, texture and mineral definition over obvious oak or exaggerated ripeness. The Terroir Unico range is all about that direct expression of place: high-altitude fruit, calcareous soils and a light-handed cellar approach. This Malbec captures the estate’s style beautifully, offering dark fruit, supple tannins and a clear Andean edge at a brilliant level of drinkability.

Zorzal is a boutique Argentine winery based in Gualtallary, one of the most distinctive high-altitude zones of the Uco Valley in Mendoza. Founded by the Michelini brothers, the estate has built its reputation on wines that feel fresh, mineral and transparent, with a strong focus on the character of the land rather than heavy winemaking influence.

The vineyards sit in the upper reaches of Tupungato, where altitude, intense sunlight, cool nights and calcareous soils help produce wines with vivid aromatics, natural acidity and a marked stony edge. This is one of the reasons Zorzal has become so closely associated with Gualtallary’s modern identity: pure fruit, chalky texture, tension and drinkability.

In the cellar, the approach is deliberately restrained. Native yeasts, concrete vessels and careful extraction are used to preserve energy and definition.

The grapes were vinified in concrete vats in a CO2-saturated environment, including 20%, which was vinified as whole bunches. Spontaneous fermentation took place with native
yeasts at average temperatures of 24°C. The wine was matured for 15 months in 228-litre French oak barrels, of which 5% were new, the remainder were a combination of 3rd, 4th and 5th use barrels.
