Grande Réserve Brut, Champagne Gosset

Champagne, France

“The Timeless Classic”

Generous, beautifully poised and full of character, Gosset’s Grande Réserve brings together the indulgence of fine patisserie and the invigorating freshness of citrus. Lemon zest and ripe yellow plum mingle with orchard fruit, delicate white flowers and a suggestion of honey, opening into toasted brioche and almond pastry as the wine unfolds in the glass. A subtle chalky character runs beneath the fruit, giving definition to the richer aromas and drawing you back for another sip.

The palate is ample and beautifully textured, with fine bubbles carrying layers of fruit and pastry across a creamy centre. Bright acidity keeps everything lively, balancing the wine’s generosity and stretching into a long, dry finish of citrus and gentle toast. There is enough depth here to take you comfortably from the first glass through dinner, making this a particularly rewarding Champagne for those who enjoy substance alongside finesse. Delicious on release, it also has the structure to develop a more mellow, biscuity complexity with careful cellaring.

For when: The candles are lit, the first guests have arrived, and dinner deserves a proper opening.

Pairs with: Warm Comté gougères, crab tartlets, pan-seared scallops with beurre blanc, roast chicken with tarragon cream, wild mushroom vol-au-vents, or aged Parmesan.

Grande Réserve is Gosset’s signature cuvée, bringing the house’s characteristic freshness and depth together in its distinctive, rounded bottle. The bottle’s design dates back to 1760, a fitting presentation for a wine from Champagne’s oldest wine house.

As a non-vintage Champagne, Grande Réserve is shaped by the marriage of different harvests rather than the conditions of one growing season. Blending allows Gosset to preserve its recognisable balance of generous fruit, savoury complexity and lively acidity from one release to the next.

Founded by Pierre Gosset in Aÿ in 1584, Gosset is the oldest wine house in Champagne. Its early reputation was built on still wines, predominantly reds, long before sparkling Champagne became the region’s defining style. Sixteen generations of the Gosset family shaped that heritage before the house joined the family-owned Renaud-Cointreau group in the early 1990s. Today, its home in Épernay continues a history spanning more than four centuries.

Gosset selects grapes from a broad network of vineyards across Champagne, giving its cellar team a varied palette of sites and varieties. For Grande Réserve, these include celebrated villages such as Aÿ, Ambonnay, Bouzy, Avize and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. Bringing different origins together is central to the wine’s balance, combining the substance of Pinot Noir with Chardonnay’s freshness and the approachable fruit of Meunier.

Cellar master Odilon de Varine continues a philosophy that places the character of the wine at the centre of every cuvée. Preserving natural acidity and allowing patient ageing on the lees are essential to the house style, building texture and complexity around a fresh, structured core. The result is Champagne with the depth to accompany food and the elegance to make a simple aperitif feel special.

Vinification took place in stainless steel vats with traditional ageing. Malolactic conversion was carefully avoided to showcase the House’s fresh signature style and preserve the naturally fruity aromas. Bottling took place late spring following the harvest, prior to aging on the lees in the cellar, for a minimum of four years. Dosage was precisely adjusted to balance freshness and vinosity without compromising the wine's character and purity. Post-disgorgement, this cuvée was returned to the cellars for at least six months to allow the smooth integration of the 6g/l dosage.
