2025 Protea Rosé, Anthonij Rupert Wyne

Western Cape, South Africa

Turkish Delight at Sunset

Softly fragrant, bright and full of easy charm, this is rosé with a little more body and personality than the pale-and-forgettable crowd. Strawberry and raspberry lead the way, joined by a gentle floral note and a fresh citrus tang that keeps everything lively and lifted. The palate is juicy and succulent, with rounded berry fruit, a touch of compote richness, and even a faint suggestion of Turkish Delight, giving the wine a slightly exotic twist. Fresh, vibrant and beautifully balanced, it has real presence without ever losing its ease.

For when: the plates are light, the weather is warm, and the bottle needs to disappear with suspicious speed.
Pairs with: grilled prawns, tomato salads, charcuterie, or something salty in the late afternoon sun.
If this wine were a place: a warm Cape terrace at dusk, with pink light in the sky and the first evening breeze beginning to move.

The Protea range sits within the Anthonij Rupert portfolio and is made to capture a brighter, more approachable expression of the Western Cape. The 2025 Rosé is a blend of six varieties, including Mourvèdre, Cinsault, Grenache Noir, Carignan, Shiraz and Malbec, and spends several months on fine lees to build a little extra texture and shape. That combination gives the wine its particular appeal, generous in fruit, but still fresh, polished and effortlessly drinkable.

Anthonij Rupert Wyne was founded on the farm, L`Ormarins in Franschhoek. Originally owned by the late Anthonij Rupert, who passed away in 2001, the farm was eventually taken over by his brother Johann Rupert in 2003 and the brand named after him. It was Johann Rupert who constructed a state-of-the-art winemaking facility, catapulting the farm into a prestigious wine estate and the beginnings of what is now a sprawling enterprise.

The focus is on terroir-specific wines and therefore it would seem obvious that the brand is made up of an impressive portfolio of farms representing the best in grape-producing locations. The portfolio is made up of L`Ormarins situated in Franschhoek, Rooderust in Darling, Riebeeksrivier in the Swartland and Altima in isolated Elandskloof. Individually each site offers optimum varietal-specific growing conditions, allowing Anthonij Rupert Wyne to adhere to the requirements of their different brands.
