2025 Organic Verdejo, Mesta
Ucles, Spain
The Shepherd’s Aperitif
Zesty and herb-scented, Mesta’s Organic Verdejo bursts from the glass with pear, lime and a touch of pineapple, followed by fennel, freshly cut grass and white pepper. Its fruit has an appealing brightness, with a subtle mineral edge adding interest beneath the citrus. The unoaked style gives those flavours room to shine, capturing Verdejo’s distinctive combination of orchard fruit and savoury herbs.
Dry and light-to-medium-bodied, the palate is generous enough to satisfy while keeping a brisk, mouthwatering pace. Juicy pear softens the citrus acidity, and a gentle herbal twist extends the finish. This is an uncomplicated pleasure with plenty of personality, equally at home beside a plate of tapas or poured before dinner. Best enjoyed young, when its fruit and aromatic freshness are at their most expressive.
For when: A few good tapas turn an ordinary evening into something worth lingering over.
Pairs with: Garlic prawns, grilled sardines with lemon, courgette and mint fritters, chicken with tarragon, seafood paella or a fennel and orange salad.
Mesta takes its name from the medieval association of shepherds that protected Spain’s traditional sheep migration routes, known as cañadas. Flocks still pass through the landscape surrounding the vineyards, connecting the wine to a long history of farming alongside nature. The sheep on the label celebrate that heritage and the organic approach behind the wine.
