2024 Pinot Nero, Elena Walch
Trentino, Alto Adige, Italy
Silk, spice and mountain air.
This is Pinot Nero with an Alpine accent and a very elegant way about it. Bright and fragrant, it opens with red cherry, raspberry and wild berry fruit, followed by a little white pepper and gentle spice that keeps everything lifted and finely drawn. The palate is juicy and fresh, with soft, velvety tannins and that lovely light-footed feel that makes good Pinot so irresistible. There is ripeness here, but also restraint, so the wine never feels heavy, only graceful, poised and quietly seductive. A red of finesse rather than force, with a youthful energy that makes it dangerously easy to keep returning to the glass. The 2024 is 100% Pinot Nero, with part of the wine matured in large oak and part in stainless steel, which helps preserve both its freshness and its gentle, polished texture.
For when: roast chicken is on the table, candles are lit, and the mood calls for something subtle but seriously lovely.
Pairs with: duck, roast chicken, mushroom risotto, charcuterie, or simply a quiet evening and the right glass.
If this wine were a person: impeccably dressed, softly spoken, and far more interesting than they first let on.
Elena Walch is one of Alto Adige’s benchmark estates, and this Pinot Nero captures that cool-climate elegance beautifully. The fruit comes from a mix of warmer vineyard sites around 400 metres and higher-altitude parcels up to 950 metres, on limestone soils with porphyry, which helps give the wine both ripeness and freshness, along with its lovely aromatic precision.
