2024 Nero d'Avola, Vigneti Zabù

Sicily, Italy

Sicily with its collar open.

This is Nero d’Avola in full Mediterranean mood, warm, generous and full of easy charm. Grown on the hills around Lake Arancio in Sambuca di Sicilia, at around 350 metres above sea level on soils of limestone, clay and sand, it has that lovely balance of ripeness and freshness that Sicily does so well. The nose opens with red cherry and berry fruit, lifted by floral notes and a gentle balsamic twist, while the palate is smooth and warming, with supple tannins, soft spice and a lingering finish touched with wildflower and sun-dried herbs. It is bright, fruit-forward and wonderfully approachable, but there is enough savoury detail to keep it feeling properly grown-up.

For when: pizza is on the table, the shutters are open, and the evening is only just getting started.
Pairs with: aubergine parmigiana, tomato-based pasta, grilled sausages, meatballs, or a very good Friday-night pizza.
If this wine were a person: effortlessly relaxed, a little sun-kissed, and always the one suggesting one more bottle.

Vigneti Zabù is based in south-western Sicily, with vineyards planted around Lake Arancio to make the most of the area’s moderating microclimate. The estate’s Nero d’Avola is made to capture the grape’s naturally generous character in a fresher, more drinkable style, with stainless steel fermentation and gentle extraction helping preserve its juicy fruit and softness.

Vigneti Zabù, in southern Sicily, is part of the Fantini group, founded by Valentino Sciotti in 1994 to produce top-quality wine from southern Italy. In 2005, Valentino and his and Sicilian winemaker Giuseppe Alfano Burruano planted their own vineyards on the hills around Lake Arancio, in Sambuca di Sicilia. Here, the untouched landscape boasts many ancient vineyards and proximity to the lake creates a perfect microclimate for grape growing. Their vines are planted at 400 metres above sea level on clay soils with good water retention capacity, which helps sustain the vines through Sicily’s hot summers. Today, these vines continue to flourish, lending themselves to attractive, drinkable wines.

The Nero d'Avola grapes were destemmed and crushed on arrival at the winery, before fermentation took place in temperature controlled stainless-steel tanks at 25°C for 10-12 days. Gentle, regular pump overs occurred every four hours during fermentation. The wine was lightly pressed and remained in stainless-steel tanks until fining and bottling.
