2024 Kererū Road Chardonnay, Pyramid Valley

Hawke's Bay, New Zealand

Orchard Silk

Silky, sunlit and quietly sophisticated, Kererū Road brings the generous charm of the Mâconnais to Hawke’s Bay. Nectarine, ripe pear and golden apple unfold around a bright centre of lemon, with a fresh lemongrass lift that keeps the aromas beautifully alive. Shortbread, roasted almond and delicate savoury spice add depth, while a subtle stony character gives the ripe fruit definition. Everything feels gently woven together, with the fruit taking centre stage.

The palate is supple and creamy, building from juicy orchard fruit into a softly nutty richness. Mouth-watering acidity brings lift, while a fine mineral texture and distinctive saline edge draw the wine into a long, beautifully composed finish. This is generous Chardonnay with the freshness to keep you coming back, equally inviting over a leisurely lunch or alongside something special from the kitchen. Already delicious, it has the balance and concentration to gain further complexity with bottle age.

For when: Lunch drifts into the afternoon and nobody minds opening another bottle.

Pairs with: Pair with butter-poached langoustines, roast chicken with tarragon cream, pan-fried sole with lemon butter, crab linguine, asparagus and pea risotto, or a slice of mature Comté.

Kererū Road takes its name from the route to Linda and Ian Quinn’s Two Terraces Vineyard in Mangatahi, an elevated inland corner of Hawke’s Bay. Inspired by the generous, finely balanced Chardonnays of the Mâconnais, Pyramid Valley selected a single parcel here to bring a new dimension to its range. The 2024 is the inaugural vintage, combining the site’s ripe citrus and stone fruit with the producer’s characteristic savoury texture.

Pyramid Valley was founded in 2000 by Mike and Claudia Weersing, who spent years searching for the right place to grow Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. They found it in the limestone hills of Waikari, North Canterbury, where their admiration for Burgundy informed both the vineyard planting and the approach in the cellar. Brian Sheth and Steve Smith MW acquired the estate in 2017, continuing its commitment to distinctive wines shaped by their origins.

The home vineyards occupy a cool site with limestone, clay and marl soils, producing the individual wines of the Botanicals Collection. Alongside these, Pyramid Valley works with its Low Burn estate in Central Otago and selected growers elsewhere in New Zealand. Kererū Road extends that exploration to Hawke’s Bay, drawing on ancient river terraces and the cooler inland conditions of Mangatahi.

Winemaker and estate manager Huw Kinch has guided the Waikari operation since 2018, alongside viticulturist Nick Paulin. Organic and biodynamic farming underpin the estate vineyards, supported by regenerative practices that encourage healthy soils and biodiversity. In the cellar, indigenous fermentation and patient maturation build complexity while keeping each wine’s fruit and vineyard character clear.

Made from 100% Chardonnay from a single parcel of Dijon clone 548 at Two Terraces Vineyard in Mangatahi, Hawke’s Bay. The vines grow on ancient river terraces of silt loam and red-metal gravels. The parcel follows Pyramid Valley’s regenerative viticulture programme and was in organic conversion with BioGro New Zealand for this vintage. Grapes were harvested by hand on 11 March 2024.

Whole bunches were pressed before fermentation with indigenous yeasts in a combination of Nico Velo concrete tulipes and seasoned oak. The emphasis is on preserving fruit purity while developing the wine’s rounded, layered texture.

The wine matured on its lees for 14 months before being bottled unfined. Extended lees contact contributes savoury depth and a creamy mouthfeel, complementing the freshness retained by the elevated vineyard.

Alcohol: 14%. Vineyard in organic conversion with BioGro New Zealand. Recommended drinking window: 2026–2034.
