2024 Costa di Rose, Umberto Cesari

Emilia-Romagna, Italy

Rose Gold Emilia

Pale, bright and quietly elegant, Costa di Rose shows Sangiovese in a wonderfully graceful rosé form. Wild strawberry, pink cherry and pomegranate rise first, followed by a soft floral note and a subtle citrus lift that keeps everything fresh and finely drawn. The palate is crisp and refreshing, but not slight, carrying a lovely line of red fruit and a faint savoury twist that gives the wine shape and character. There is charm here from the first sip, but also a lovely sense of poise, making it feel polished, dry and effortlessly drinkable.

For when: lunch is light, the weather is warm, and the second bottle feels entirely justified.
Pairs with: grilled prawns, tomato salad, charcuterie, or simply something salty in the late afternoon sun.
If this wine were a place: a sunlit terrace in Emilia-Romagna, with pale pink in the glass and a warm breeze drifting through.

Umberto Cesari is one of Emilia-Romagna’s most established names, founded in the hills near Castel San Pietro Terme and known for giving local varieties a more polished, contemporary expression. Costa di Rose comes from relatively young Sangiovese vines, around 10 years old, and is made with a freshness-first approach, gentle pressing, cool fermentation and steel ageing, which helps preserve its bright fruit, clean texture and easy elegance.

For Umberto Cesari, producing good wine in Emilia Romagna was a family tradition. It is here that Umberto and his wife Giuliana started their company in 1965, when they bought 20 hectares of land in the hills. Their ambition was to turn Sangiovese into a great wine, reflecting the typicity of the area. The winery has continually expanded and today the estate extends over 355 hectares divided into distinct vineyards; La Casetta, Parolino, Cà Grande, Laurento, Liano, Claterna, Miravalle and Tauleto each of which provides the perfect micro-climate for the vines planted. Their estate is sustainably cultivated and certified sustainable by SQNPI. As pioneers of quality, this family-run estate wins numerous of accolades every year and has been awarded 'IWSC Italian Winemaker of the Year' four times in the last 15 years. The estate is now in the hands of Umberto’s son, Gianmaria Cesari, who follows in Umberto's footsteps.

The clusters were gently pressed and the juice spent less than one hour in contact with the skins, imparting the delicate antique pink colour. Clarification took place by gravity and the must was fermented with selected yeasts at cool temperatures to retain the purity of fruit and crisp, fresh style. The wine was matured in stainless steel tanks.
