2023 Saperavi, Vachnadziani Winery

Kakheti, Georgia

The Kakheti Inkstone Red

This is Georgian red wine with depth, spice and a dark, ancient pulse. Made from Saperavi, Georgia’s famous teinturier grape, it opens with wild berries, ripe red plum, cassis and black cherry, before notes of lavender, black tea, pepper and warm spice begin to rise. It is deeply coloured, generous and full of character, with the grape’s natural acidity keeping the fruit fresh and alive.

The palate is juicy, balanced and richly fruited, with berry fruit, plum skin, soft tannins and a warming spicy finish. There is enough structure to feel serious, but the pleasure is immediate: dark fruit, savoury lift and that unmistakable Georgian sense of history in the glass.

For when you want a red with colour, character and a story that goes back thousands of years.
Pairs with lamb shoulder, grilled sausages, beef stew, mushroom khinkali, smoky aubergine, hard cheeses, or anything with garlic, herbs and char.
If this wine were… a stone, it would be black-red and polished smooth, warmed by the Kakheti sun and stained with berry juice.

Vachnadziani Winery is one of Georgia’s historic producers, established in 1953 in the village of Vachnadziani in Gurjaani, Kakheti. Georgia is considered to be the ‘cradle of wine’, as 8,000 year-old indigenous Rkatsiteli grape seeds have been found in clay vessels. Vachnadziani was established in 1953 and is one of the oldest wineries in Georgia. During the Soviet years the vineyard fell into disrepair, but has since received significant investment. The aim is to preserve ancient wine culture while combining it with modern technology. With over 1,000 hectares of vineyard across Kakheti in eastern Georgia and Imereti, Racha and Lechkhumi in the west, Vachnadziani cultivates 25 vine varieties, the majority of which are indigenous, showcasing the character of this historic winemaking region.

The fruit was carefully selected prior to vinification. Fermentation took place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks to retain purity of fruit and varietal character. The wine underwent malolactic conversion to soften the palate and was produced in an unoaked style.
