2023 Primitivo di Puglia, A Mano

Puglia, Italy

Southern Comfort, Bottled.

Dark, juicy and gloriously generous, this Primitivo brings all the warmth of Puglia with none of the heaviness. Bursting with ripe plum, blackberry and raspberry, it is layered with sweet Mediterranean spice and a touch of sun-baked earth. The palate is plush and full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a lovely sense of balance that keeps all that rich fruit feeling polished rather than overpowering. Bold, smooth and deeply satisfying.

For when: You want a red that feels like a big, warm hug.
Pairs with: Slow-cooked ragù, grilled sausages or aubergine parmigiana.
If this wine were: A long candlelit supper by the sea with everyone staying later than planned.

Founded by Mark Shannon and Elvezia Sbalchiero, A Mano is a love letter to Puglia, and to Primitivo in particular. With Mark’s winemaking background and Elvezia’s deep wine expertise, the pair saw the potential of this southern Italian region and helped bring the grape to wider attention through a quality-first, modern approach. The fruit for this wine comes from Mark’s favourite coastal vineyard near the Ionian Sea, where ancient alberello bush vines, many between 70 and 100 years old, grow in dark reddish-brown soils that hold and radiate the Mediterranean heat. The result is a Primitivo with real character, generosity and unmistakable southern charm.

A Mano is the creation of Californian winemaker Mark Shannon and northern Italian wine marketing expert Elvezia Sbalchiero, who fell for Puglia and made it their winemaking home. Their story began with a visit to the region’s ancient Primitivo vineyards, and what was meant to be a short trip became the foundation of a producer that has helped redefine the grape’s reputation through a more polished, quality-led, modern style.

Working closely with growers and paying premium prices for exceptional fruit, A Mano has built its name on old-vine material, careful sourcing, and a belief that Primitivo can offer far more than simple power. Their wines capture the warmth and generosity of southern Italy, but with freshness, precision and balance, showing why A Mano has become one of the names most closely associated with the modern rise of Primitivo from Puglia.

The Primitivo grapes were fermented for 36 hours without intervention before the free run juice was drawn off and chilled down to 12°C. The cold must was then reintroduced to the warm cap and thoroughly mixed. This complex step was carried to allow the cells in the grape skins to break down from the heat of fermentation and provide colour without alcohol extracting harsh tannins. The reintroduction of the cold must also provides the intense fruitiness of a cold fermentation. After racking, the wine remained in an underground cement tank at a controlled cool temperature until bottling to preserve freshness.
