2023 Pétalos, Descendientes de J Palacios
Bierzo, Spain
Bierzo Bloom
This is Bierzo with perfume, pulse and a beautiful old-vine glow. Made mainly from Mencía, it opens with red cherry, raspberry, wild plum and violet, before darker notes of liquorice, herbs, graphite, spice and stony earth begin to rise. It has that lovely Galician-border feel: Atlantic freshness, mountain fruit and just enough wildness around the edges.
The palate is silky, vivid and beautifully lifted, with red fruit, bramble, floral spice and mineral detail carried by fine tannins and bright acidity. It is generous without being heavy, serious without being stern, and full of that effortless drinkability that makes Pétalos such a benchmark for modern Bierzo.
For when you want Spanish red with freshness, fragrance and old-vine soul.
Pairs with roast pork, lamb chops, mushroom rice, grilled chicken, charcuterie, paprika-spiced dishes, lentils, or a very good plate of jamón.
If this wine were… a hillside, it would be Corullón at dusk, slate underfoot, violets in the air and red fruit glowing against the stones.
Descendientes de J. Palacios was founded in 1998 as a collaboration between Álvaro Palacios and his nephew Ricardo Pérez Palacios, helping bring Bierzo and its old Mencía vineyards to far wider attention. Pétalos is their entry point, but it is anything but simple, drawn from many small plots around Corullón, with the producer focused on high-elevation vineyards, old soils and a deeply expressive view of Bierzo.
