2023 Çal Karası Kalecik Karası Rosé, Kuzubağ
Aegean Islands, Turkey
The Denizli Sunset Rosé
This is Turkish rosé with colour, lift and a beautifully sunlit sense of charm. A blend of Çal Karası and Kalecik Karası, it opens with strawberry, cherry, redcurrant and cranberry, before citrus peel, soft spice and a delicate savoury note begin to appear. The colour is pale salmon, but the flavour has real presence, with native Turkish grapes giving it both freshness and character.
The palate is bright, juicy and refreshing, with red berry fruit, grapefruit, lemony acidity and a gentle hint of spice. It is crisp enough for warm afternoons, but interesting enough for the table, especially when there is smoke, herbs, salt and spice involved. Chill it well and let it bring a little Anatolian sunshine to the glass.
For when you want rosé with freshness, colour and a proper sense of discovery.
Pairs with grilled prawns, lamb köfte, chicken şiş, tomato salads, feta, charred peppers, aubergine, mezze, sushi, or anything involving sunshine and olive oil.
If this wine were… a view, it would be the sun dropping over the Çal plateau, turning the sky salmon pink while the evening grill begins to smoke.
Kuzubağ is based in Çal, Denizli, where the Kuzu family planted their first vineyards in 2007 and began production at the estate winery in 2021. Their vineyards sit high on the Çal plateau, around 850 to 1100 metres, with clay, loam and calcareous soils, wide day-to-night temperature shifts and a focus on organic, sustainable viticulture. The estate gives special importance to indigenous grapes, including Çal Karası, which sits at the heart of this vivid, regional rosé.
