2022 Syrah 'TH', Undurraga
Leyda Valley, Chile
“Pacific Pepper”
This is Syrah with a sea breeze running through it. The 2022 TH opens with lifted aromas of wild blackberry, cracked black pepper and fresh rosemary, wrapped around notes of violet, graphite and cool dark fruit. There is something distinctly windswept about it, savoury, herbal and mineral, with the Pacific influence keeping everything taut and finely drawn.
On the palate, it is poised and beautifully structured. The fruit is dark and precise rather than heavy, with bramble, plum skin and spice held firmly by tense tannins and a bright line of acidity. A small portion of whole-bunch fermentation adds lift and aromatic complexity, while twelve months in large French oak foudres brings texture without blurring the wine’s edges. The finish is long, stony and peppery, with a freshness that gives the wine real identity and drive.
This is cool-climate Syrah at its most composed, muscular enough to satisfy, refined enough to keep you thinking.
For when you want Syrah with energy, savoury detail and a real sense of place.
Pairs with lamb cutlets, grilled venison, charred aubergine or anything with herbs and smoke.
If this wine were a landscape, it would be a sunlit granite slope with ocean air rolling across it.
Undurraga, founded in 1885, is one of Chile’s most respected wineries and a leading name in site-driven winemaking. Their Terroir Hunter range reflects years of research by head winemaker Rafael Urrejola into Chile’s most distinctive vineyard sites. This Syrah comes from a tiny 3.11-hectare plot in Leyda Valley, just eight miles from the Pacific, where granite soils, cool temperatures and dense Hermitage-style planting create wines of tension, mineral character and finesse. Certified by Sustainable Wines of Chile, Undurraga combines thoughtful vineyard work with minimal intervention in the cellar, allowing the vineyard to speak with clarity.
