2022 Protea Shiraz, Anthonij Rupert Wyne
Western Cape, South Africa
Cape Nightfall
Dark-fruited, supple and quietly spicy, this is Shiraz with all the warmth and generosity you hope for, but with a lovely freshness running underneath. Plum and black fruit lead the way, followed by dried herbs, cracked pepper and a soft smoky edge that gives the wine shape and intrigue. The palate is rounded and inviting, with ripe blackberry fruit, smooth texture and a sustained spicy finish that lingers with real ease. There is plenty of flavour here, but it never feels overdone, just balanced, polished and very easy to enjoy. The 2022 vintage followed a wet winter and cooler, moderate growing conditions, which helped the wine keep both concentration and freshness.
For when: the grill is glowing, the food is hearty, and the bottle needs warmth without heaviness.
Pairs with: lamb chops, smoky sausages, grilled aubergine, or slow-cooked beef with herbs.
If this wine were a place: a warm Cape evening with spice in the air and the last light fading over the hills.
The Protea range sits within the Anthonij Rupert portfolio and is designed to offer a more open, approachable expression of the Western Cape. For this Shiraz, the wine spent 12 months in French oak, giving it its gentle polish and subtle spice, while the broader house style keeps the fruit front and centre.
