2022 Prelude Cabernet Sauvignon, Leeuwin Estate

Margaret River, Australia

Margaret River Tailoring

Perfumed, poised and quietly commanding, this is Cabernet with all the hallmarks of Margaret River, dark fruit, savoury detail and that lovely sense of polish without excess. Blackberry, blackcurrant and cherry stone lead the way, followed by dried herbs, a touch of cedar and a subtle gravelly note that gives the wine shape and seriousness. The palate is medium to full-bodied, with ripe dark berries, fine tannins and a fresh line of acidity that keeps everything composed and beautifully in balance. There is richness here, certainly, but it arrives with restraint and finesse, finishing long, savoury and quietly assured.

For when: the roast is on the table, the candles are lit, and the red needs quiet confidence rather than noise.
Pairs with: roast lamb, steak, mushroom dishes, or mature hard cheeses.
If this wine were a place: a gravelly Margaret River hillside at dusk, with warm earth underfoot and cool air moving in from the coast.

Leeuwin Estate is one of Margaret River’s benchmark family producers, known for wines that combine generosity with real precision and elegance. The Prelude range offers a more approachable expression of the estate’s style, but still carries the same care and sense of place that define the house. In this Cabernet, that translates into a wine that feels classically Margaret River, savoury, structured and beautifully refined.

Leeuwin Estate is one of the defining names of Margaret River and a producer whose wines helped establish the region on the world stage. Founded in the early 1970s by Denis and Tricia Horgan, the estate rose to prominence through a close connection with Robert Mondavi, who recognised the site’s potential and encouraged the family to pursue fine wine production. Since then, Leeuwin has become especially celebrated for Chardonnay, with the Art Series range achieving international acclaim, while the wider portfolio continues to show the estate’s hallmark balance of purity, precision and quiet power.

What makes Leeuwin so compelling is the way it combines ambition with elegance. The family remains at the heart of the estate, and the wines are shaped by Margaret River’s maritime climate, which brings long ripening conditions and natural freshness, alongside a house style built on detail, finesse and longevity rather than excess. Across both the iconic flagship wines and the more approachable Prelude range, Leeuwin Estate has become a benchmark not just for Margaret River, but for Australian fine wine more broadly.
