North Canterbury, New Zealand

This is New Zealand Pinot Noir with bright fruit, savoury detail and a beautifully silky feel. Rhubarb, cherry and pomegranate lead the nose, followed by violet, tree moss, mushroom, cinnamon, leather and a gentle smoky spice. It has the freshness and lift of cool-climate Pinot, but there is enough dark-fruited depth and earthy complexity to make it feel properly satisfying.

On the palate, it is plush, fragrant and finely textured, with red cherry, plum and raspberry fruit carried by polished tannins and refreshing acidity. The whole-bunch element brings spice and savoury lift, while 18 months in oak gives subtle structure without smothering the fruit. A brilliant Pinot for anyone who wants elegance, comfort and value in the same glass.

Main Divide is the accessible, great-value label from the Donaldson family, the team behind Pegasus Bay in North Canterbury. Named after the Southern Alps, the backbone of New Zealand’s South Island, Main Divide focuses on fruit from selected South Island vineyards chosen for quality, regional character and freshness.

The wines are made at Pegasus Bay’s Waipara Valley base, bringing serious pedigree to bottles that remain generous, approachable and easy to enjoy. The house style favours expressive fruit, natural balance and enough savoury complexity to keep the wines interesting at the table.

For Pinot Noir, Main Divide uses traditional Burgundian-inspired techniques, including small-vat fermentation, a portion of whole bunches, hand plunging and maturation in oak barriques. The result is a Pinot that over-delivers: bright, silky and food-friendly, with the polish of a far more expensive wine.

The 2022 Main Divide Pinot Noir is Pinot Noir from selected South Island vineyards. The season began with average weather over flowering, giving a balanced crop, followed by a cooler summer that delayed ripening. A warm, dry autumn then allowed the grapes to stay on the vine until they reached the right level of ripeness.

The blocks were picked between 6 and 15 April, with fruit harvested at different stages to build a range of red and dark fruit flavours. Around 40% of the grapes were included as whole bunches, with the remainder destemmed on top while retaining as many whole berries as possible. Fermentation began naturally after a cool soak, with gentle hand plunging during fermentation and a short post-fermentation steeping period to build texture and structure.

The wine was pressed gently and matured for 18 months in oak barriques, around 20% new, followed by natural malolactic fermentation.
