2022 Kratoshija, Tikveš

Tikveš, Republic of North Macedonia

The Macedonian Red Spark

This is Macedonian red wine with brightness, spice and a wonderfully juicy heart. Kratoshija brings redcurrant, cherry, cranberry and bramble fruit, followed by pepper, soft herbs, sweet spice and a gentle savoury warmth. It feels lively and generous, with enough freshness to keep every glass moving.

The palate is medium-bodied, textured and fruit-forward, with red berries, ripe bramble, spice and soft tannins leading into a warm, satisfying finish. There is an easy charm here, but also real character, the kind of bottle that makes you wonder why Macedonian wine is not on more tables.

For when you want something juicy, characterful and just off the usual wine-map.
Pairs with barbecued meats, lamb kebabs, grilled sausages, hard cheeses, mushroom stew, smoky aubergine, or a spicy tomato pasta.
If this wine were… a spark, it would be the first flare of a charcoal grill at sunset, with red fruit, warm stone and pepper in the air.

Tikveš is one of North Macedonia’s defining wineries, rooted in the historic Tikveš wine region and tracing organised production back to 1885. Today, the estate combines long regional tradition with modern winemaking, working with native varieties such as Kratoshija, Vranec and Smederevka to bring Macedonian wine to a wider audience.

Every wine tells a story about the synergy between the soil, sun, grapes and the country of its origin. The Tikveš Winery has been narrating the Republic of North Macedonia’s story as a winemaking country since 1885. However, the Republic of North Macedonia remains one of Europe’s last undiscovered wine countries, with a landscape of vineyards, mountains, lakes and rivers and a climate ideally suited to producing quality grapes. Located in the Tikveš region, the estate sustainably cultivates indigenous varieties such as Smederevka, Vranec and Kratoshija, combining tradition with modern winemaking technology to produce authentic and characterful wines.

The grapes were destemmed, crushed and fermented in stainless steel tanks to preserve fruity aromatics. After fermentation, the wine was pressed off the skins and underwent malolactic conversion on its lees to soften the palate. It was then cold stabilised, filtered and bottled with minimal sulphur.
