2022 Haziran, Kuzubağ

Aegean Islands, Turkey

The June Fire of Denizli

This is Turkish red wine with fruit, warmth and a bright sense of celebration. “Haziran” means June, and the wine carries that feeling of ripening days and long evenings beautifully. It is a blend of the indigenous Öküzgözü with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, giving plenty of red and black fruit with a subtle touch of oak.

It opens with blackberry, black plum, cherry and cassis, followed by sweet spice, vanilla, pepper, earth and a little dark chocolate. The palate is full, ripe and generous, with smooth tannins, vibrant acidity and a savoury, spicy finish. It feels polished but still full of character, a Turkish red that brings both comfort and curiosity to the table.

For when you want a generous red with a story, a little spice and a sense of discovery.
Pairs with lamb kebabs, grilled steak, beef güveç, spiced aubergine, roast peppers, mushroom stew, kofta, or a smoky mezze spread.
If this wine were… a month, it would be June in Denizli: warm stone, purple fruit, smoke from the grill and the evening just beginning.

Kuzubağ is based in Çal, Denizli, in Turkey’s inner Aegean region, where vineyards sit around 850 metres above sea level. The estate’s philosophy is rooted in respect for vine, soil and people, with a focus on expressing the character of both local and international grapes grown in the region. Its first winery production began in 2021, after years spent establishing and maturing the family vineyards.

Kuzubağ Estate Winery was founded in 2007 by Salih Kuzu and Aslı Kuzu, based between İstanbul and Denizli, when the family first planted vineyards in their hometown of Çal. With a focus on showcasing the region’s distinctive terroir and indigenous Turkish varieties, the estate patiently developed its vineyards before building a modern winery at the heart of the property. The first vintage was released in 2021. Led by winemaker Semril Zorlu, the estate works with grapes grown exclusively in Çal, Denizli, with 34 hectares certified organic and the remainder in conversion, reflecting a strong commitment to sustainability and terroir expression.

The wine was produced entirely by gravity. A pre-fermentation cold maceration took place for a minimum of three days. During maceration and fermentation, techniques such as punch down, delestage and pumping over were used twice daily depending on the condition of the must. Fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks at 23–25°C using selected yeasts. 20% of the wine was matured in French oak barrels for seven months, with a small proportion in new oak and the remainder in second-use barrels, while the rest was aged in stainless steel to preserve fruit purity and balance.
