2022 Cinsault Soothsayer, Garage Wine Company

Itata Valley, Chile

The Itata Oracle

This is Chilean Cinsault with brightness, wild charm and a beautifully earthy pulse. From dry-farmed old-vine fruit in the Secano Interior of Itata, it opens with dark plum, red cherry, redcurrant and rosehip, before cedar, wet earth, dried herbs, spice and a little smoky mineral edge begin to rise. It feels vivid and handmade, with fruit from multiple small parcels brought together in one single ferment.

The palate is medium-bodied, sappy and full of energy, with juicy red fruit, orange zest, fine tannins and stony acidity pulling everything into a long, mouth-watering finish. It has plenty of fruit, but the real pleasure is in the texture: rustic, bright, sinewy and quietly electric.

For when you want a red with old-vine soul, freshness and Chilean wildness.
Pairs with lamb kofta, roast chicken, charcuterie, grilled aubergine, mushroom tacos, pork belly, lentils, or pizza with smoky peppers.
If this wine were… a prediction, it would be whispered over warm granite at dusk, full of plum, cedar, rose petals and something just about to happen.

Garage Wine Company began quite literally in Pilar and Derek’s garage, before growing into one of Chile’s most respected small-scale producers. Working with old, dry-farmed vineyards and small growers across Maule and Itata, the team focuses on hand-farmed parcels, native yeasts, manual punch downs and basket pressing. Their wines feel artisanal in the best sense: low-intervention, community-rooted and full of place.

Toronto-born Derek Mossman Knapp originally went to Chile to ski, found snow, love and wine and never looked back. In 2001 he co-founded The Garage Wine Company together with his wife Pilar, and oenologist Dr. Alvaro Peña.

Focussing on the Coastal Range in the Maule, they established a ‘revival’ winemaking programme focused on rediscovering old, neglected parcels of vines, combined with small batch experiments. These ancient, dry-farmed vines, with deep, complex root systems are what makes this project so special.

For over 20 years, working with small vigneron partners who use ancestral knowledge passed down through generations, they have slowly nurtured these parcels, vine by vine using regenerative farming techniques. The wines are thoughtfully crafted with wild yeasts, in small lots with manual punch downs and a small, basket press.

The Garage Wine Company has become an important part of Chile’s dynamic artisanal wine scene, and their collection of award-winning, individual and sometimes limited wines is something truly special. “Garage is Garage, because sometimes it is the people no one imagines anything of, who do the things that no one can imagine”.

The grapes were naturally fermented in open-top fermenters with native yeasts, with manual punching down of the cap and manual pressing. A small portion of the wine (1/5) was vinified as whole bunches, which underwent the traditional practice of treading -with clean feet- resulting in a portion with higher tannins and VA, which complemented the remainder of the barrels. The wine was aged in third-use barrels, along with some foudres, from various cooperages, lasting over two winters.
