2022 Chianti Classico Organic, Querciabella

Chianti Classico, Tuscany, Italy

The Sangiovese Heartbeat

This is Chianti Classico with the volume turned to elegance rather than noise. Pure Sangiovese, bright and beautifully poised, it opens with red cherry, plum, raspberry and blood orange, followed by rose petal, cedar, sweet spice, graphite and a little forest-floor savouriness. It feels immediately Tuscan: lifted, aromatic, food-loving and full of quiet confidence.

The palate is juicy, supple and finely structured, with bright acidity carrying the red fruit through layers of spice, leather and mineral detail. The tannins are polished but present, giving the wine shape without heaviness. There is depth from the warm 2022 vintage, but also freshness from Querciabella’s high-altitude sites, making this a Chianti Classico that feels both generous and precise.

For when you want a red that makes dinner feel instantly more Italian.
Pairs with tomato-rich pasta, wild boar ragù, roast chicken, grilled lamb chops, aubergine parmigiana, ribollita, charcuterie, or aged pecorino.
If this wine were… a table, it would be a long one under olive trees, covered in terracotta plates, candlelight and very good intentions.

Querciabella is one of Chianti Classico’s benchmark estates, founded in 1974 and renowned for wines that combine Tuscan tradition with purity, precision and an uncompromising commitment to organic and plant-based biodynamic farming. This Chianti Classico has been central to the estate from the beginning, drawing Sangiovese from high-altitude hillside parcels in Ruffoli, Lamole and Radda, with vineyards ranging from 350 to nearly 700 metres. The result is one of Querciabella’s most graceful signatures: certified organic, vegan, vibrant, site-expressive and built around the nobility of Sangiovese.

The name Querciabella – meaning ‘beautiful oak’ – is entirely appropriate to this estate in Chianti, which is surrounded by a sheltering forest of magnificent trees. Sebastiano Castiglioni is at the helm of one of the most innovative wineries in Italy, spearheading vegan and biodynamic practices in his two estates. Helped by the incredibly talented South African winemaker Manfred Ing, Querciabella are releasing not only some of the purest expressions of Chianti Classico but also venturing into Super-Tuscan territory with Camartina and Palafreno. Querciabella are also responsible for one of the most acclaimed Italian whites, Batàr, alongside a range of exciting Maremma wines.

Grapes are hand-picked at optimal ripening in different site across the appellation. Following de-stemming, a further selection on the cellar’s sorting table ensures that only the best berries are crushed and transferred into a combination of stainless steel, cement and oak fermenters.

Each lot of Sangiovese ferments separately at cool temperatures (22°C–28°C) with gentle pump-overs and remains on the skins for up to 4 weeks for post-fermentation maceration. We might use submerged caps to ferment the best vineyards and bring out their unique textural complexity. After malolactic fermentation, the base wines mature in 225L barrels, 500L tonneau or 30 HL oak vats for 14 months. Once the final blend is bottled, it ages for at least six months before release.
